State Rep. and anti-DWI leader arrested for driving drunk
State Representative Joe Thompson, a major backer of tough new anti-DWI legislation in the recent session of the legislature, was arrested early this morning for drunk driving. Thompson was arrested at around 2 a.m. this morning in downtown Albuquerque and is charged with careless driving, and DWI.
Ironically, the Albuquerque republican stood side-by-side with Governor Richardson on Tuesday as new, tough penalties against drunk driving were signed into law.
He was the sponsor of two D.W.I. bills in this legislative session.
Thompson, who represents residents of the northeast heights, was arrested in Albuquerque near Broadway and Central Avenue. KRQE News 13 has learned Thompsons blood alcohol level was at .12, well above the legal threshold of .08.
In a statement released to the media this afternoon, Thompson said "I apologize to the citizens of New Mexico. While I am terribly embarrassed by this situation, I am thankful that no one else was involved."
The statement goes on to say that Thompson takes full responsibility for his actions, and that he will seek whatever treatment is necessary.
As a result of the incident, Thompson has announced he will not continue his campaign for the Public Regulatory Commission.
Thompson did say that the police and jail personnel were courteous and professional.

I watched this on TV last night. It's a shame that this happened. It's going to follow him now, and will probably hurt his political ambitions.

ha! .12 is barely drunk. I bet he was one of the ones that pushed lowering the legal limit from .10 . Schadenfreude bump (even though I don't drink any more).

Nope, the media will protect anyone who advances a Politically Correct cause, even should he dare to be a Republican.
Now hand over your blood to the government for analysis, we can't have any prohibited chemicals without proper authorization. Your papers, please.

It caught a scofflaw drunk white Republican. Good thing too. Now we can point to this example and show the law is being enforced with no favoritism.
