the title of this piece is rather racist in tone

Newspaper columnists DO NOT compose the headlines (titles) of their articles, never, none.

I think the musical style predates the Germanic invasion of Texas. Tejano music is heavily influenced by Musica Norteno, the music of northern Mexico. Not sure where that style got the "Oompa" sound, but I agree.

It was influenced by German polka music --- the same musical instrument the accordian is used. The lyrics are often very different though --- they're not like "Roll out the barrel" but about drug smuggling and that popping sound you often hear is about shooting law enforcement agents.

Your "link" to a definition of Peronism is just more obfuscation. We don't need, and didn't ask for, a refresher on Peron. If you can't back up (source) your reckless charge against Pat, then kindly shut-up and disappear.

BTW, here's a couple of pertinent sources for the posters that are interested in truth and straight forwardness.

1) Questioner: I would like to ask Mr. Buchanan about his stance on immigration, which has usually been against Third World people. He has openly objected to Africans coming here. Why are you not allowing or giving everybody the same favors to enter this country as long as they are qualified to be here?

Pat: All I’m saying is that our levels of immigration now in the last 30 years have been enormous. It’s almost over a million legal immigrants a year, and half a million illegals who come here and stay. And you’re rapidly changing the nature of the entire country; we speak 300 languages. Unless we do something and make sure the things that unite us are elevated--like language and history and all the rest of it -- we’re gonna lose our country, my friend. But anybody from any country and any continent can be a good American. We know that from our history.

2)Thomas Sowell

Death of the West?

If Pat Buchanan did not exist, someone would have to try to invent him -- which would be a tall order. Although in some quarters he is depicted as a one-dimensional right-wing stereotype, somewhere between Archie Bunker and Adolf Hitler, anyone who reads his latest book, "The Death of the West," will discover a man of many dimensions and insights -- very knowledgeable about our times and about history, and an incredibly good writer on top of it all.

What sets Pat Buchanan apart from those conservatives who are happy if the Dow Jones is up and the tax rates are down is that he understands that we are in a culture war -- and that only one side is fighting all out. Meanwhile, all too many other Americans are unaware that this war is going on. Buchanan also understands that the ultimate stakes in the culture war are the survival of American society and Western civilization.

In "The Death of the West," he presents an overwhelming case that the key cultural institutions of American society -- the schools, the colleges, the arts, and the media, including Hollywood -- have been consciously and systematically undermining the foundation beliefs and traditions of American and Western civilization for years.

It will be interesting to see how many "conservatives" will attempt to savage NPR and Mr. Sowell as "facsists"!

Seems like Pat himself, IMO, is the "refresher" course on Peronism, with his own economic rhetoric.

It will be interesting to see how many "conservatives" will attempt to savage NPR and Mr. Sowell as "facsists"!

NPR is basically liberal fascist and I think that 99.9% of FR would concur with me on that.

As for Professor Sowell you only had a snippet of his whole article. I also beleive that Professor Sowell would disagree with Pat Buchanan's Peronist(nationalist/socialist) economic views.

Sheesh icon you are more cowardly than Missouri, IMO. At least she provided a mouse clickable link, while you only provided the url.

But you go ahead and keep on posting, no one is stopping you from making a fool of yourself.

How do you know that? Do you really think I want 50 million Russians or "WhateverStans" here either? Like I said, a Jew in Israel lecturing me about a completely open door immigration policy.....that is rich...you have chutzpah running out your ears.

I don't care what restrictions on immigration are. But if there are restrictions, they should not be done to keep America "white" - which is simple nonsense.

Hell, many if not most Jews will not even marry a non-Jew without conversion

What does this have to do with anything? Most Catholics would not marry non-Catholic either. So what? This is not racism.

You are a hypocrite. You espouse racial/ethnic/identity/religious purity for your tribe and your country and have the nerve to preach to me that the US is too white and that anyone who wishes to keep this country Eurocentric is racist.

I bet you are not Israeli born. You talk like an American Jew full of tikkun olam for everybody.

Bull shite. Western Europe colonized and brought civilization to virtually the entire planet.

You are harping on where we morphed from hunter gatherer to farming/villages. The Fertile Crescent or the Tarim Basin...take yer pick.

Why not go back to where man began?

All in one place or different places staggered in time?

I prefer the dominance of western Europeans here...but I don't think we need ANYONE at the levels that the Mexican peasants are streaming in.

You really have issues with the historical racial-ethnic balance here.

LOL...I bet you and I could have real fun with Southern issues homeo!

Western Europe colonized and brought civilization to virtually the entire planet.

Err.. no it didn't. Inventing written languages -- Mesopotamia, inventing a phonetic alphabet -- Pheonicia, the first monotheistic religions -- Israel and Persia (Zoroaster), the development of maths -- India, the development of geometry -- Greece (Greek ain't Western European, it belongs to the orthodox, Easter sphere). Western Europe colonized a large proportion of the world, but didn't civilise it. Western Europe in say 1400 was still primitive compared to the Eastern states. It did not "bring" civilisation anywhere except to sub-saharan Africa.

And I'm not harping about hunter gatherers to villagers, I'm talking about cities, planned cities and trading -- that was developed in Mesopotamia, Persia (Elam), Egypt, the Indus valley and Phoenicia. Western Europe in 3000 B.C. was neolithic, stone age. Ditto in 2250 BC when the pyramids were built. The GReeks developed their civilisation from the Egyptians and Persians and other mid eastern civilisations (and enhanced it), the Romans borrowed from the Greeks and Etruscans.

And, um, the entire Western Hemisphere.

Well, that is debatable. The Incas did have a pretty high civilisation as did the Mayas before them. The Spaniards of 1500 were of a higher civilisation but as high as say the other Europeans in what is now the US and Canada (native American tribes WERE pretty primitive by any standards), so, changing my post #592:

Western Europe brought civilisation to Sub saharan Africa, north America and Australasia.

Don't get me wrong Western Europe did civilise those parts, but to say that it brought civilisation to the eastern parts of the Eurasian continent or even to north Africa and the Middle East and eastern Europe is a laugh.

Rephrasing #598

The Spaniards of 1500 were of a higher civilisation than the Incas. But the other Europeans in what is now the US and Canada were of a far higher civilisation than the native American tribes that roamed there.
