The kits, which contain such items as a Haggadah, matzot, grape juice and gefilte fish, have been shipped overseas and throughout the United States so that Jewish military personnel can conduct their own Passover seder despite the daily challenges they face. The kits were distributed by the Jewish Welfare Board Jewish Chaplains Council, an agency supported by United Jewish Communities (UJC) and the Jewish Federations of North America. PASSOVER IN THE PERSIAN GULF

Jewish Federation-Supported Agency Provides Passover Seder Kits to Jewish Military Personnel

For Jewish military men and women serving in the Persian Gulf region, observing Passover next week will be possible in the form of
special holiday meal kits
being shipped to the area with Jewish communal support.

More than 1,500 Passover Solo Seder Kits have been shipped overseas so that Jewish military personnel can conduct their own seder despite the daily challenges they face. Kits have also been shipped throughout the United States. The seder is the traditional Passover meal marking the Jews’ passage from slavery in Egypt.

The kits contain such items as a Passover pamphlet describing the holiday, a Haggadah, matzah, grape juice, gefilte fish, chicken soup with matzah balls and other kosher-for-Passover items. Cases of Passover food included in the kits have also been shipped.

“This is a spiritual mission that is being undertaken for the men and women in the military, who are serving God and serving our country,” said Rabbi David Lapp, Director of the Jewish Welfare Board (JWB) Jewish Chaplains Council, an agency of the Jewish Community Centers Association of North America. “Even after Passover, we will continue on with programs that show our unwavering support and express our tremendous gratitude for their bravery.”

The JWB Jewish Chaplains Council has undertaken the project with the support of United Jewish Communities (UJC), representing 156 Jewish federations throughout North America, so that Jewish military personnel can take part in the rituals, customs and traditions of the holiday though they are far from home.

The kits are particularly critical for servicemen and women who are on the front lines in the Gulf, as they are constantly moving and therefore cannot attend a traditional seder, said Rabbi Lapp. The kits allow them to observe Passover no matter where they are, and provide a meaningful connection to Judaism amidst the turmoil of war.

Seven Jewish chaplains have been deployed to the Gulf to help distribute the Passover Solo Seder Kits to military personnel and to meet their needs during the holiday, according to the JWB.
Military personnel not in combat zones
will have the opportunity to attend a seder organized by a chaplain.

To help provide the kits, the JWB Jewish Chaplains Council has partnered with organizations such as
the Jewish Federation of Rockland County (New York).

“If they don't have access to Passover food, in addition to not being with their families to celebrate, I figured it was our role to help them observe the best way they can,” said Jonathan Feldstein, the federation's campaign director. “They should have a joyous holiday, despite fighting a war and being in the middle of the desert. We realized that when we say that federation helps Jews around the world, this year there are thousands more, American Jews, who need our help to observe and celebrate Pesach (Passover) far from home.”

There are 28 Jewish chaplains throughout the United States assigned to help Jewish military personnel in their area celebrate Passover, Rabbi Lapp said. In locations without a Jewish chaplain, Jewish military lay leaders trained and certified by the JWB Jewish Chaplains Council will be dedicated to helping servicemen and women observe the holiday.

Jewish Community Centers near military bases will be inviting military personnel and their families, as well as the family members of the men and women who are overseas, to take part in Passover observances, Rabbi Lapp added.

The JWB Jewish Chaplains Council is the U.S. Department of Defense's accredited agency for recruiting and endorsing rabbis to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces and Reserves, as well as Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, and acts on behalf of the American Jewish community by supplying religious items to the United States military.

txradioguy: Your post #33 is the one that brought tears to my eyes today. Thank you for your kind words. There seems to be so little that I can do anymore. It's nice to know that what little I do do at least somehow makes a difference.

To all: I may not get caught up with the thread until late this evening. I need to hit the showers soon. Then, I'll be headed into the wilds of Indiana to celebrate my niece's birthday.

The Stones Cry Out

Read: Luke 19:29-40

If these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out. —Luke 19:40

Bible In One Year: Ruth 1-4; Luke 8:1-25

I received a letter from a woman who told me she had grown up in a troubled home. At an early age she ran away, began a life of crime, and spent time in jail. Later, ensnared by drugs, she felt that the only way out of her sin-darkened life was suicide.

At that point, because of the witness of two women who told her about Jesus, she put her trust in the Savior and found a reason for living. Soon she wanted to tell others about Jesus. She had some artistic ability, so she began to paint Bible verses and spiritual sayings on smooth stones she collected from beaches. She sold them and used the money to aid missionary causes. Those stones were her way of telling others about Jesus.

This woman's story reminds me of what Jesus said as He approached Jerusalem a few days before His crucifixion. The multitude declared, "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!" (Luke 19:38). When the Pharisees told Jesus to quiet the crowd, He said that if the people were silenced, even the stones would cry out (v.40).

Of course, Jesus wasn't talking about painted stones, but it is still true that even if our verbal witness is silenced, there are all sorts of ways to tell others about Christ. What "stones" can you use to tell others of your Savior and King? —Henry Bosch

Through transformed eyes, Lord, help us see
A world of people in despair,
And help us reach them with Your love,
To show them that we really care. —Sper

I'm just a nobody telling everybody about Somebody who can save anybody!

Please respectfully tell your Mike that this member in good standing of the wOOhOO authority says that armyboy DESERVES every break he can work into his day. armyboy's time here is important for our morale!!! (And, if it helps boost his morale -- and the morale of others who serve with him, then that's a wonderful bonus!)

God bless you and all who serve to preserve our freedoms. You're in our prayers....

Obviously, I need to take back control.

You don't handle sitting in sidelines very well, do you? LOL

(Seriously: I hope you're enjoying your reunion and wish you a speedy recovery! Relax while you have the chance! Okay?) ;)
