Frost says Sessions should denounce immigration ads
The Dallas Morning News ^ | April 6, 2004 | DAVE LEVINTHAL

Posted on 04/07/2004 7:43:36 PM PDT by primeval patriot

Democratic U.S. Rep. Martin Frost says Republican U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions is hiding "behind the white sheets of white supremacy" for not demanding that an anti-immigration organization end a television advertisement blitz blasting Mr. Frost's legislative record.

Sessions campaign manager Chris Homan said Mr. Sessions has no knowledge of the organization sponsoring the advertisements, the Coalition for the Future American Worker, and no involvement with them. "We're not going to engage groups like this in any capacity," Mr. Homan said. "Pete has never been someone who supports discrimination," Mr. Homan added. "He abhors those groups that do."

Mr. Frost said he doesn't think Mr. Sessions is a racist. "But if he's sincere, he'd denounce an ad like this," he said.

The advertisements, which are scheduled to run into next week on Dallas' ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC affiliate stations, feature dark images of black and Hispanic people with an off-camera voice stating that Mr. Frost supports legislation that would allow immigrants to crowd schools, drive down worker wages and deplete the job pool.

They do not mention Mr. Sessions, nor do they allude to the congressmen's congressional race in Texas' 32nd District, which political experts rank among the most high-profile and potentially expensive in the nation.

Federal records show that the Coalition for the Future American Worker's member organizations receive financing from other organizations, such as the Pioneer Fund, which studies racial differences and counts Nazi sympathizers among its founders.

The spots have nothing to do with racial issues and have no bearing on the Frost-Sessions race, said Dan Stein, a spokesman for the Coalition for the Future American Worker. Immigration is the only issue at hand, Mr. Stein said.

"It's shocking that he's not prepared to defend the legislation he's sponsored," he said of Mr. Frost. "Maybe he should read his own legislation. He's trying to deny his own agenda."

The advertisements do not cite specific legislation, only saying, "Martin Frost is sponsoring a bill to give amnesty to up to 1.2 million illegal aliens in Texas." Mr. Stein said the advertisements primarily refer to two bills concerning immigration: House Bill 3274 and House Bill 1684. His organization "only had so much room in the text of the ad" and left some information out, Mr. Stein said.

Mr. Frost said that no bill he is sponsoring or co-sponsoring will ever give amnesty in Texas to hundreds of thousands of undocumented workers. "I have no idea what they're talking about, quite frankly," Mr. Frost said. "I'm for the freedom of the press. I'm for the First Amendment. But I'm not for people to lie with impunity."

Mr. Frost on Tuesday also called on all television stations to pull the advertisements. Kathy Clements, president and general manager of WFAA-TV (Channel 8), said the coalition purchased $67,260 worth of advertisement space during its morning, midday and early evening newscasts from Tuesday through April 15.

Although the Frost campaign asked Channel 8 to remove the advertisements, the station considers it "appropriate" to continue running them, she said. Representatives from KTVT-TV (Channel 11) said the Frost campaign had not formally asked the station to do so. Mr. Homan suggested that Mr. Frost defend his own immigration record instead of slamming Mr. Sessions for advertisements he neither supports nor sponsors.

Asked whether he'd consider calling on all interest groups voluntarily withhold advertisements related to him or his opponent, Mr. Frost said he would "tomorrow" - if Mr. Sessions agreed to do the same.

"Let Pete Sessions and I settle this at high noon," Mr. Frost said.

"We can certainly consider that," Mr. Homan said of a joint Frost-Sessions plea to interest groups.

Frost needs to shut up along with the rest of the RATS. To accuse Rep Sessions of white supremacy is ludicrous and disgusting. This name calling by the RATs is disgusting and childish. What a despicable group of people belong to the RAT Party.

Frost has a tendency to whine a lot. It is not an attractive character characteristic.

Perhaps Frost should give up his phoney Mccarthist tactics of accusing his foes of mythical crimes and actually DEFEND his record.

I am SO SICK of this 'racist' label for everyone who doesn't think an ILLEGAL NON-CITIZEN deserves all the rights and privileges of a citizen! Let's not confuse these twits with facts, but HISPANIC is NOT a separate race anyway - it's an 'ethnicity', as if that should matter if you want to be an AMERICAN. And let's remember, the Mexicans regularly deport ANYONE not a citizen and deprive them of property rights, yet we're supposed to give away the farm here and supplement them with health, education, and welfare benefits. As a daughter and in-law of veterans and a LEGAL immigrant descendent, I AM REALLY OFFENDED BY THESE 'GIMME IT 'CAUSE I WANT IT' crowds. /rant

It's only racist if you think people from whiter countries should break our immigration laws and just illegally enter our country if they feel like doing that. The laws on applying for a visa and entering this country legally should apply to everyone --- no matter what their skin color.

You completely missed the point of my post. I said LEGAL immigration; I didn't mention skin color should be a criteria - but these groups are using it as a weapon, which was my point.

Believe me, I've seen the threads (and participated - guilty as charged!!) But anything that says 'Future of the American Worker' should just say 'Brave new World' in my opinion. The words 'coalition', 'progressive', 'association of....' all scream bad news to me.

It was the Democratic Party that supported enslaving blacks. The Democratic Party was so enamored with slavery that they fostered the cession movement and started the Civil War. It was the Democratic Party members that formed the KKK and filled its ranks. It was the Democratic Party members who engaged in lynchings. The Democrats also instituted poll taxes and literacy tests to dissuade the blacks from voting. It was the Democrats, under Wilson, who instituted a racial classification system in order to severely restrict blacks from immigrating to this country. The Jim Crow laws were implemented and enforced by the Democrats. It was a Democrat who interred the Japanese.
It was the Democrats that elevated former member and recruiter for the KKK to a leadership position in the Senate.
Sessions, if he had a backbone, would respond to Frost's baseless attacks with the foregoing.
