I don't know.... but I would like to see some figures to get an idea just how profitable the government agency is. I know it costs a lot to run a local post office, so does anyone have any figures?

No way.

Then we'd have all kinds of postal employees going postal all at once...... ;-)

Yes, and the public school monopoly also has to go. It's gotten way too political and the children are nothing but pawns in their political games.

Hey! I work for the US Postal Service!

I'm conflicted about this because the founding fathers felt it was a critical enough element to national infrustructure to operate under the government.

Although I think we need to be severely audited and cut the waste.

True, it wasn't a feasible free market enterprise back then. However, I'm also conflicted because the things that might enter the country nowadays might need federal scrutiny. I guess I'd like to see the post office out of all domestic but have authority over all incoming international mail...problem is that they would find a way to soak us just as bad on that.

Yeah sure, if a private company can deliver my letter from New York to California for 37 cents.

People have competed with the Postal Service before. That's how Wells Fargo got its start.

They're snotty, lying and arrogant. They COULDN'T POSSIBLY survive in competition with UPS and the others. If you receive a package in unacceptably tattered condition from any of the others you can refuse it. When my last Gevalia shipment arrived it was torn to shreds and items missing and repacked WITH USPS MATERIAL They denied denied denied. nope we don't know nuthin', Sorry! Those losers couldn't earn anything like their pay level at a REAL shipper. I hope they go under.

My brother hopes they go under too. He works at the USPS and the rumor is that vested employees with 20+ years will get an early out retirement settlement. He's about ready to retire too. 20 years of the soft life lifting and carrying parcels and sacks full of mail at 3am has just about busted his spine.

Why do you think one couldn't?

Anyway, nobody's talking about eliminating the post office, just ending the prohibition on competition.
