9mm is great if all you want to do is spray and pray.

Depends on the ammo and distance. At 100+ yards, I have little problem hitting with 9mm, but .45 fails. Even at close range, my 9mm gold dot 147 grainers at about 1000 fps seem to peerform every bit as well as standard .45 loads in gelatin and have significantly more penetration.

The Model of 1911 was designed to be used by mounted cavalry. I don't think it was meant to be used much beyond 50 yards, and most combat pistols serve their purpose well inside 25 yards. For pistol shooting beyond 50 yards, I will take the Smith and Wesson Model 29 .44 mag with full house loads, or the Freedom Arms .454 Casull, or even better, the Remington LTR in .308 Win!.

Penetration is the opposite of stopping power of the .45. Unless you want to penetrate car doors, then the penetration of the 9 is bad. Better is the 38 auto used by the FBI against AlCApone in order to replace the low penetration of the .45.

An 8 shot 357 revolver would be an alternative. the 9mm is puny compared to the .357 or the .38 in terms of penetration power for about the same size.

.40 SW obviously have the most lead you can get in a gun, more so than a 45 for the same size magazine.

I am shooting Sunday. I will find out if the Springfield Armory's XD40-sw Service model with 180's is accurate. I will test it at 25 yards.

It won NRA gun of the year for 2003. Just bought it last week.

Close in my old Colt 1911 has put down power. But Ohio just passed CCW and the XD is lighter, though not much smaller.

I already found that there are pre-ban mags that can be adapted to fit the XD it has a teardrop cutout on the front side of the mag instead of side cuts. Make that same cut into some other mags and they are inter-changable in both weapons. So we go from 10+1 to 14+1 :o)
