Perhaps every generation of Christian Americans needs its own movie version of the Passion. And maybe this one needs it more than most.

Many of Europe's smartest people decided they no longer needed their version of the Christian tradition and let it slip, alas before their unlovely experience with the 20th century. But before that and the immediacy of cinema, Europe created magnificent, painted interpretations of Christ's passion, and these works were often meant to reinforce faith.

I would much rather be threatened by a Baptist trying to convert me with a New Testament than an Islamic radical trying to blow me up with her body. Or by the silence, in the face of explicit anti-Semitism, of agnostic European intellectuals and political elites.

Henninger is one of my favorite editorial writers, but I am quite disappointed that he, of all people, would decide to opine about this film without actually having seen it.

The writer pontificates (pun intended) on a movie he judges without the necessary step of actually seeking it. Some of Goya's work is horrifying, as I can attest. But The Passio of the Christ makes Goya seem like Dr. Seuss, as I can attest.

Ignorance is never a proper basis for analysis of either political or social subjects.
