US pilots do not have free fire authority. I'm sure that the wedding party was firing automatic weapons into the air, probably in the vacinity of US aircraft, which triggered approval for returning fire. In most of the articles they admit firing weapons into the air, it's a tradition.
Regardless of how this turns out, I'm glad to see we're aggressively patrolling the borders with Syria and Jordan. I hope it doesn't stop.

I don't give a damn if it's a tradition, it's a dangerous, stupid, backward practice under the best of circumstances, and a completely and totally brain dead imbecilic thing to do in a war zone. Don't EVEN try to justify firing guns in the air. It kills people.
