2 Minorities (Hispanic and Asian)Spur Rapid U.S. Growth

WASHINGTON, June 14 (AP) - Explosive growth among Hispanic- and Asian-Americans propelled a surge in the United States population from 2000 to 2003 to nearly 300 million people, the Census Bureau reported on Monday.

The number of people of Hispanic descent, the nation's largest minority group, rose to 39.9 million, a 13 percent increase from April 2000 to July 2003, the agency said. That far outpaced the 3 percent increase in the American population during the same time, to 290.8 million.

Asian-Americans were the next fastest growing among the large minority groups, up 12.6 percent, to 11.9 million, while the black population rose nearly 4 percent, to 37 million.

About 4.3 million people listed themselves as of more than one race, up 10.5 percent from 2000.

The population of Hispanic- and Asian-Americans rose in nearly every state over the 1990's, in large part as a result of immigration. People who identified themselves only as "white" remained the single largest group, at 197 million, up just 1 percent from 2000 to 2003.

What kind of a country downplays academic merit in favor of racially-based (and biased) criteria for admission to university?

Ours, now...welcome to the club...you've official "made it."

"Asians are not a protected minority in the U.S. Blacks and Hispanics are. Don't believe me? Try getting into college with a 4.0 GPA and an Asian last name. Tough luck. But mention somewhere on your application or admission essay that you are Black or Hispanic, and doors are opened wide for you."

My apologies you are correct. I was being sarcastic anyway but your definitely right. Asians and whites are penalized and punished for their efforts. It's sick, and those who advocate this type of thing should be tossed out of the country.

Alot of gang-bangers here. Are there people striving and succeeding? Yes.

My main point is people are people. Some smart, some not. Some good, some bad. And if we have a system in place that puts people in neighborhoods where they don't belong, i.e., they haven't reached the point where they can achieve that goal on their own, it is a recipe for disaster and resentment. Resentment when these immigrants destroy the property value of middle class people who have worked so hard to get where they are.

Getting a 4.0 does not guarantee someone admittance to a university as much as that hurts some to know. Even if an Asian is sure that he/she lost their slot to some uneducated stupid black person with a 3.9 insteaf of a 4.0, Asians will always benefit from the 'positive' stereotype of being smart and educated.

If they are going to have refugees come over here, I advocate classes that teach english and understanding American culture. When I say American culture, I mean very general things. Going by the little I know, it didn't seem like a good idea to drop the Hmong people off and not have them vaguely familar with their new home.

Thanks.

I agree with you on not having racial categories on applications. People should be judged on their merits.

I'll submit to you that judging people on their merits is a recent invention in the USA.

I'm not sure they always do. For one --- picture being a Chinese kid who needs a little extra help with math. They'd probably accuse you of being lazy or something. Plus since Asians tend (depending on the country they're from because not all Asian groups do equally well) to learn English and assimilate --- in a generation or two they're slipping down to everyone else's level.

Unfortunately that is not the general direction these days. Immigration today is not like the immigration of old.

Todays immigrants are savvy with the help of a spokesperson for the "community". They push for legalization or recognition of their old country's laws.

Our latest addition of Hmong to St. Paul this summer (it's estimated at 5,000 but nobody is exactly sure of the number) will already have classrooms in a number of schools set apart to teach in Hmong.

This is an example of what I find disconcerting as I see the US being weakened by becoming not a melting pot, but many different nations instead.

I've met Koreans, Japanese,Chinese, etc. I've made very good friends with many Asian kids because our parents were exactly the same, constant drumbeat of education education education and if you failed a math test it was a major event. I remember an Asian friend remarking that black kids have it easy since no one expects them to do much (how sad). But yes I've also noticed with all ethnic groups these days kids slide right down going this way and that way but not in a good direction. I'm sounding old *LOL* but it's not all hopeless. For every kid that chucks the golden opportunities of America out the window someone is there to catch it.

It's the same situation here but with hispanic kids and then the Chinese and Korean. I've not talked to enough Russians to know about them. They want to make it possible for immigrant children to be exempt from the english regents. That's already handicapping them with a general diploma and not a regents diploma.

I hate liberal special interest groups. They don't care about these people.

And there you have it. It's modeling and direction. But IMHO, it really all has to do with G-d. With faith, you just can't go wrong.

And what makes you think Blacks and Hispanics don't get 4.0's? Both of my daughters did.

Congratulations to your daughters, and my apologies for generalizing. I should know better than that.

The Asian girls in my daughter's class refused to speak English during a group project. When my daughter and her friend responded by speaking pig latin they were sent to the principal's office.

Some day (I hope soon), the Asian girls will realize that in order to succeed, they must be proficient in the language of the country in which they reside. It would behoove them to learn English quickly and learn it well, just like millions before them have done.

Nope you can't go wrong being educated. You can't be fooled and no can take advantage of you. That's why liberals want to keep people as drowsy as possible. However, it is all faith and believing in one's self. My mother is very religious and a mighty woman of prayer.

And that liberal bigotry is the worst. The condescending gratuities.

People who identified themselves only as "white"

I used to check white --- but I won't check "non-hispanic-white" -- that's too phoney so if that's the only category I check "other". More and more I like the "other" category. The whole racial categories thing is getting pretty silly.

Dubya got it right...soft bigotry of low expectations combined with special interest groups saying (or hissing like the Devil) we can help you. WE know what's better for you, etc.

Strange argument. Please explain why this hypothetical "stupid uneducated" black person with the 3.9 got the slot over the Asian with the 4.0. Also explain why Asians should be punished for your alleged "positive stereotype" that I'm not sure even exists.

LOL... you think that everyone with a 4.0 should get into school? You're fooling yourself. Did Bush get a 4.0 to get into Yale or wherever he went? BTW, if you don't think that Asians benefit from the stereotype of being smart and educated then you've not gotten out much or you're not aware of prevailing attitudes about people.
