LOS ANGELES — Shooting for sport is becoming more and more popular across the country.

Along with Pilates and windsurfing, clay target shooting (search) and handgun target shooting (search) are some of America's fastest growing sports. Some 20 million Americans participate in recreational gun activities.

Those who shoot clays call it "golf with guns."

The riots, 9/11, and assorted "gun control" legislation, have all led to increased gun sales. My guess is that Californians are better armed than ever. Some of the folks I go shooting with are even liberals, if you can believe that. I'm working on em.

Odd. While I do enjoy shooting as a sport....
in my family...that is not why we learned about firearms and firearm safety. It was more because it (with the concept of hunting and self defense) was a good skill set.
Along with things like fishing, proper usage of a knife, field dressing, setting up camp, etc. Also comp and map usage for Land Nav.
I can surely understand its growth for recreation and sport though. The way I was taught has been refined through recreational usage.
I imagine liberals are going into full freak mode over ideas of more kids being taught safe use of a firearm.

There are plenty of VERY BUSY law compliant gun stores doing very well and they take the law, the public and the products they sell very seriously and operate in a very professional and helpful manner.
The paperwork if you saw it all would make you laugh, then cry! LOL

I've gone into shops with friends buying things a few times this last year and they are not hurting, are doing well, but are made to jump a few hoops to get the sales done.

You really don't see cars of gangs going for a destructive joy ride in the suburbs because they will defend themselves, family and property.
I think they know the odds of returning from trying to act up in the suburbs would be not good odds.

It is really just for self defense out here. Nobody goes looking for a fight, but they do stay sharp with the shooting skills to remain familiar with their weapons and skilled enough to be effective and safe.
People do more tanning than hunting out here. LOL

Good lord. Pilates isn't even a sport. The author of this story is a nitwit.

In the good old days, they taught gals how to continue firing at a crumpled assailant to be sure.

LOL, all a flutter girly liberal boys banging away at clays with their scatter guns,

OK lads, now pull the plugs on those 12 ga. pumps and auto goers. Slap in five 3 inch loads of high base double 00 buck and let'er rip. You can put 60 individual rounds of lethal .36 (9 MM) soft lead balls 30 yards down range in a near nano second.

Those innocent clay busters are also WMD for close up work. Notice cops never leave home without one strapped next to the dash or in the trunk.

Not a home invading perp born who won't defecate yellow at that sharp mechanical "snick, snick" of a trombone action being made ready for him.

I like the spirit of your idea. We must be as wary of the encroaching tyranny in DC as we are of wacko terrorists. One problem:

"...follow Switzerland's lead and all have military training..."

Who's going to pay for this government training program? Why can't people learn this in the private sector, the way our Founding Fathers envisioned?

Are you a cook or a rifleman? Shotguns and pistols are luxuries. First you must prove yourself by learning to use the queen of all personal weapons, the rifle.

"My guess is that Californians are better armed than ever."

Californians instinctively feel a danger. At some point, the president of Mexico might quietly encourage paramilitary groups to form, with the purpose of taking over California. That's what ultimately happens when a host nation, for whatever reason, loses control of formal immigration policy, particularly when the other nation believes it is immigrating to land it should rightfully own.

I think a fair example of what could happen to California is Kosovo. Like California, Kosovo was clearly Serb terrority. Like California, immigrants felt a claim to Kosovo.

Pilates isn't a sport-- it's just an exercise method. I use it to supplement my daily run. It's a full-body toning and strength training method, although some modified versions do include aerobic dance (good for those rainy days when I can't run without risking a broken leg.) There are lots of classes in gymns, and various versions of Pilates made up about 9/10 of the exercise videos and DVD's in stock at my local Academy. If you weren't aware of its popularity, that might be because you don't hang out much with its natural target group-- suburban moms. ;)
