A sport utility vehicle exploded in a parking lot at Nashville's largest hotel, killing one male inside, and authorities said they suspected a homemade bomb was involved.
The explosion occurred late Tuesday about a half-mile from the main entrance of Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, and about 200 feet from a day care center, which was closed, said Jim Cavanaugh of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Police said the blast was felt miles away, and it left nothing but a shell of the SUV.
Investigators from the federal Joint Terrorism Task Force were at the scene, but FBI agent Doug Riggin said there was no reason to suspect terrorism.
Cavanaugh said the cause hadn't yet been determined but investigators suspect a homemade bomb.
"It could have been homicide or suicide or the guy may have just blown himself up," police Homicide Detective Brad Putnam said.
Cavanaugh said authorities were trying to trace the SUV's license plates to identify the victim.
The Gaylord Opryland has 2,881 rooms. The Grand Ole Opry's theater is on the hotel grounds and there is an adjacent shopping mall. "We haven't got a lot of calls from guests, but we are addressing any concerns they may have," hotel spokeswoman Karen Hunter-Lowery said.

First recorded terrorist suicide attack since 2001 (that we know of)?
Those danged exploding SUV's.
Somehow I'd bet he can rule out the "guy may have blown himself up" cause of death.
Well, that makes two, first the NYC subway pipe bomb and now this. Keep your heads up and eyes open for the usual suspects.....
Does the guy have a beard? Any signs of a towel?
Perfect example of a "soft target."
Also an example of what Lt. Col Dave Grossman http://www.killology.com has predicted of targeting our kids!
Look for more of the same.
Maybe a 3rd. I found this on another message board this morning.

Pipe Bomb Found in Gwinnett Neighborhood
POSTED: 11:07 am EDT July 21, 2004
SUGAR HILL -- Police were searching for the person who planted a pipe bomb that exploded Wednesday in the street of a Gwinnett County subdivision.
No injuries were reported when the device detonated shortly after 7 a.m. on Bellingham Drive.
Gwinnett police dispatched its bomb detection unit to the area, which was cordoned off while investigators conducted their probe. Authorities were also combing the neighborhood looking for similar devices.
Has anyone considered spontaneous human combustion? (with an emphasis on the "combustion" in this case)
I dunno, does he have a really mad ex-wife or former business partner? And check if he had a life insurance policy!
Thanks for letting me know, I hadn't heard about that one. Quite frankly, that's a little bit too close for comfort.
That makes three.
I think this qualifies for a "Hold muh beer" comment.
There were also the two in California that were in the process of making a pipe bomb but their powder exploded when their hammering on the pipe caused a spark. They blew themselves up.

Here's the story from a Nashville TV station. There's a link to video, as well...

Sounds like a hit to me. We need to find out who the person was and who they were associated with.
There was a pipe bomb set off in a NYC subway last night. It too was described and not being a terrorist attack. That it was left in a public place with the express purpose of killing innocents notwithstanding.
I did a google news search of Pipe Bomb and what I came up with is somewhat disturbing.
