The media love "scares" -- over the years we've seen a succession of them: Asbestos, radon gas, and now "toxic" mold and chemically treated wood.
Sure, each of these substances can cause ill effects in very high doses; but in each case, the risk has been vastly overhyped. And costly abatement programs are often counterproductive.
As every scare gets debunked over the years, a new one comes along for lawyers and "abatement" scammers to profit from.
It's the liberal version of everyone is equal: since someone might be allergic to peanuts, we cannot allow any peanuts on airplanes; if someone pours spills hot coffee on her lap, every cup has to have a warning; if someone dies from smoking, noone can smoke inside any public building, or within 50 yards of a government office. I'm waiting for liberals to make the connection between homosexuality and AIDS, God help the gay people when that happens.
