Apparently hoping to outdo Hillary Clinton's improbable attempt to reinvent herself as a duck hunter, John Kerry has tried to avoid alienating supporters of gun rights by depicting himself as a deer hunter. Mark Steyn will have none of it.
Steyn wrote in the London Telegraph yesterday: "He was in Wisconsin the other day, pretending to be a regular guy, and was asked what kind of hunting he preferred. 'I'd have to say deer,' said the senator. 'I go out with my trusty 12-gauge double-barrel, crawl around on my stomach ... That's hunting.'
"This caused huge hilarity among my New Hampshire neighbours. None of us has ever heard of anybody deer hunting by crawling around on his stomach, even in Massachusetts. The trick is to blend in with the woods and, given that John Kerry already looks like a forlorn tree in late fall, it's hard to see why he'd give up his natural advantage in order to hunt horizontally.

You could use a sabot slug I believe, but I defer to FReepers who are hunters.
There are areas of the east coast you have to use shotgun with deer slugs. It is illegal to be in the field with any rifle larger than .30 cal
Shotguns are the only modern firearms allowed for deer hunting in much of Maryland.
Not at all. In Pennsylvania, you can't deer hunt with a rifle south of I-80 - you have to use a shotgun with slugs or buckshot.
What was absurd is that Kerry said that he crawled on his belly to hunt deer.
Most use slugs. But some use buckshot. Hmmm... Where do you think it got that name?
In some states this as the preferred method....when hunting in a smaller acreage plot of land. Hence, the term "deer slug".
goodness gracious. is this really happening? the democratic party thing. it's almost to the point you feel something akin to pity. almost.
Not that remarkable. In the southern parts of wisconsin, gun deer season is shotgun only. Nothern parts have the choice of rifle or shotgun.
The crawling around on his stomach is the ridiculous part. Either you walk around yourself or as part of a drive, or you're up in a stand waiting all day.
Since no one on this forum thinks I should be hunting deer with them.
Guess it can't be done.
Guess I will have to back to using only handguns again.
I defer to you East Coasters on this. Out here in the West, hunting deer with a shotgun accomplishes one thing. It leaves you with a big ole' mess.
I'll take my rifle anyday, get a clean kill, and not have to see Bambi suffer.
Why? what is the difference?
just want to know.
I hunt deer with a shotgun - rifles are not permitted for deer hunting where I live, I don't like my CVA muzzleloader & I haven't scraped together enough for a Thompson Contender.
The point isn't that he claimed to hunt with a shotgun, but rather (1) that he claimed to use a double-barrel shotgun (which in over&under configuration is almost exclusively for birds and in side-by configuration is suitable only for deer hunting with buckshot since they don't handle slugs accurately); and (2) that he claimed to hunt deer crawling on his belly, which, while appropriate for topping crests, isn't a technique designed to get you close enough to a deer to dispatch it with buckshot.
My father and I used a variety of firearms to hunt deer, ranging from Rifles to Shotguns....(12 gauge Browning Semi-auto with slugs).
I know alot of people who use shotguns to hunt deer.
In some states, it is the only way you can hunt deer...ie. Ohio I believe. They use slugs.
When did Hillary claim to be a duck hunter? I must have missed that one.
No, not if you expect to get scratches and put in for a purple heart.....
Apparently hunting means a completely different thing out in the East.
Meh, I thought it was another example of pandering, and no one else said you can't hunt with your deer slugs there ace.
