Your son may be engaged in a battle of wits with a couple of unarmed men. Those who do not have intelligent reasons for their beliefs typically do resort to emotional and juvenile outbursts.

I would suggest your son tell these people he has strong reasons for his political beliefs but will not debate them in the gutter of name-calling. Within a group of men, anyone who does not stand up to name-calling bullies will suffer mightily until he does. Once he does, they will leave him alone. This is an age-old rule.

Catch them talking smack about Bush, then report them to the base commander. That will show em...JFK

My very huge, very conservative and avid wrestler nephew has signed up for the Navy and will be going for training in a few weeks...God bless him and your son!

Tell your son not to bother to argue with the stupidity of a liberal. it's a no win situation. They don't like to deal in facts it hurts their brain washed thought process.

Could you give his e-mail address? I am a 20 year disabled Vet and would like to give him support. One question I would like to pass on to him for his liberal shipmate is: Kerry once before condemned people in the military as war criminals. How does anyone know he won't do it again. Due to Hanoi Jane and John I had the dubious honor of being cursed out and spat on at JFK Airport in 1972. I will not let that happen again

Thank your son for his service to America.

Unlike some other folks that would like you to believe that the Navy has that many Liberals, that is not the case. The majority of Sailors fall into two categories:

1. Conservative
2. That don't give a rip.

Are there Liberals? Sure there are. However, the few that I've found tend to be married to a woman who is a Liberal, their from a predominately Liberal town, or they just go along because they don't really know the difference.

And you'll find that many of the military's new Liberals tend to be from the minority segment of America. Although, to be fair: you'll find many more conservatives and Republicans in the military that are black and brown than in their home of records.

The biggest thing that any Liberal hates is the TRUTH and FACTS to back it up.

I am a Viet Nam veteran (River Boats) and was in the Navy for 11 years. Most of that time I spent over seas. I saw all kinds of people in the Navy. Here is my advice for your son:

Tell your son not to concern himself over the nut cases that he runs across in the Navy. Concentrate on completing his Practical Factors (they call them something different now, He'll know what I'm referring to), find friends that are not $hit-heads like those guys, and do the right thing. If he does not get swayed down the wrong path, and keeps his nose clean, he will get promoted MUCH faster than the knuckel-heads that you refer to above. I'm not saying that revenge is something that we want to pursue (but it sure can be sweet).

Thank you for your son's service, and God bless your family.

As an old army guy I understand.

The army had it's grumbler's and naysayer's in my day. They were a very small minority.

They were easily dispatched to the rear at the earliest opportunity. The best way it worked for us then was to get the word to a senior noncom.

They were gone real quick.

For us it was top seargents, in the navy it would be top chiefs.

FRegards....

God Bless your Son and thank him from the depths of my heart, the daughter of a Col who served in WWII under Patton, for his service to our country. I recommend that you have freepers send notes to you and you can forward them along to your Son. If you give out an Email address the same liberals could write to him and make things worse. Please post how we can show our support.

Must be all that time floating around the sea not seeing solid ground weeks on end. I much rather do a rotation through NTC or JRTC than a sea voyage, or whatever they call them.

I've talked to Navy guys who were liberal, in my five years in the Army can't recall ever meeting one. Go figure.

Two Bits, this is really "small potatoes" I look back upon my Naval Service with incredibly pride at the superb fellow sailors that I had the pleasure of serving with.

The bums in every Command are really in the small minority -- including the liberal whackos that seem to come out of the woodwork from time to time.

Further, combat -- or really stressful challenges to the Command -- seem to press these differences aside, at least to a marked degree. I remember a squadron flag that went up each day --alongside the National ensign -- at one command I had early on. Our troops would have died before that flag was sullied -- and only because of unit pride during a protracted period on intense operational commitment.

You may wish to take a deep breath. This too may very well pass...and your son, hopefully, will remember the stress lines in the faces of his favorite skipper and leading chief, as they attempted to set an example for your son in periods of challenging service that most assuredly lie ahead.

The "scuttlebutt" aggravations are really insignificant -- and your son will most assuredly put these impressions (and discussions) into their proper context. (The whine of live rounds is a great bonding element.)

Very respectfully, /s/Captain D. K.Pope

He gets stronger every day in the military. He'll handle it.

There is a very apt saying in times like your son is going through. Don't get mad, get even.

Two people can play their game. Tell him to identify one of their most prized personal possessions, Then tell him to quietly see that it finds its way overboard. Not an item from each of them. Just one most prized item from one of them.

Then, tell him to never mention it. Never admit it. Never hint about it or bring it up. Just quietly go about his business in the satisfaction that he has gotten even.

And tell him to stop wasting his time with discussions of politics with these nim rods.

I was in the Navy 23 years. There are liberals there, a lot of good people too. I had quite a few heated arguments with the libs.
I think his command should be able to do something about the harassment he is suffering, though that may make things worse.
I was in aviation, and I loved it. Launching and recovering jets on the ship was great.
A program was recently announced that allows transfer from the Navy and Air Force to the Army, might be something to look into.

First, thank you goes out to your fine son for his service.

Second, I have been a conservative since age 14, and had the pleasure of attending Vassar College (leftist haven) for four years and Law School for 3 years (not nearly as bad as Vassar but I was still in the minority).

That was a fairly rough seven years, though I don't want to compare it so a stint in the service, of course. Your son is a better man than I am.

Anyway, he should just avoid the topic and not take the bait whenever it is dangled in front on him. He can't win win these people - they lie, deny uncontroverted facts, change the subject, and draw tenuous conclusions. It's hard to have an adult conversation with uninformed petulant children.

If it is that bad, see if he can request a transfer to get away from the more bothersome people,

If nothing else fails, I am a sicilian with a very bad attitude in Las Vegas - let me know when the ship is back in San Diego, I will meet him and treat him to a cup of java, and have him point the bad guys out to me. Who knows, it's a dangerous city, I hope they will be allright.

So that's my advice. Also tell him not to get frustrated - as bad as it is in the service, its much worse out here in the general population. I don't get frustrated - I just cut them off and let them hang.

Many americans (and many of his shipmates) are of like mind and support him 100%. There is no consensus in this nation, so that's just the way it is. He shouldn't feel threatened or frustrated by it - in fact, it always made me feel like a million bucks! ;-)

I have always maintained that liberals benefit far more from their personal relationships with conservatives, than conservatives

Honestly, who do you feel better going to in a 'gut check' time - a leftie or a rightie? In my life, its a Rightie clean sweep. In a leftie's life, its most likely a list of 'go to' people dominated by righties. Face it, we are more skilled, more reliable, better in a crisis, etc etc and so on.

I honestly have purged my personal life from as many liberals as possible - life is better that way, I don't argue, and I don't waste my time saving the neck of an ingrate who, only a short while after I help them out, cocks their head, smirks, and tells me how much smarter he is than I am, and how could I be so dumb as to be a conservative.

Our side REALLY has to let the liberal types hang - it's really about time.
