'Believe' tour off to a bumpy start Kerry's 21-state trip gets a mixed reception during its first day out

By JULIE MASON Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle

SCRANTON, PA. - The Democratic presidential ticket of John Kerry and John Edwards worked Friday to spread the energy, beginning a national bus tour hours after the Boston convention.

Kerry, whose convention speech emphasized national security and foreign policy, said in an interview with The Associated Press that he would put Osama bin Laden on trial in U.S. courts.

That would ensure the "fastest, surest route" to a murder conviction if the terrorist mastermind is captured while he is president, Kerry said.

"I want him tried for murder in New York City, and in Virginia and in Pennsylvania," where planes hijacked by al-Qaida operatives crashed Sept. 11, 2001, he said.

His "Believe in America" road tour got off to a bumpy start Friday.

A sparse crowd showed up at a morning rally in Boston to begin the 21-state tour. On board were the Kerry family, the Edwards family and an entourage.

Kerry admitted he was dragging. "I am longing to have my head hit a pillow," he said.

Highways were blocked from Boston to Scranton as the campaign's 10 buses and support vehicles lumbered westward.

In Newburg, N.Y., they made an unscheduled stop to celebrate John and Elizabeth Edwards' 27th anniversary.

The couple observed their anniversary tradition of a meal at Wendy's, a nod to their early married days when it was all they could afford.

Kerry joined them inside and spied a table of Marines. But when he struck up a conversation, the Marines answered tersely and expressed irritation.

"He imposed on us and I disagree with him coming over here to shake our hands," said one, who did not give his name.

Later, at a stop in Harrisburg, Pa., Edwards turned his sights on Bush, who had criticized Kerry. "Today, the president went out and spoke for the first time since John spoke (at the convention), and here we go again," Edwards said. "The same old thing, relentless negative attacks on John Kerry.

"They are trying to take this campaign for the highest office in the land down the lowest possible road."

What's this, a joke? Saddam being executed faster in the USA? Hell, he'd have 20 years of appeals before anything was done.

Believe in America? I thought it was "America can do Better"

Like, Son, you got an A on this math test. I know you can do better. Did he already get rid of the scolding-sounding slogan?

Well, it looks like he was hit in the head with a cinder-block.

Perfect!
Get ready for a major SNAFU from Kerry. He just does not have the stamina to keep up a tough campaign schedule like President Bush does. He is such a whiney wiener. Hold on to your seats, we are in for some FUN times :)

They also said they were 100% against him and 100% for Bush!

Exacto! Kerry would put bin Laden ON TRIAL????? Meaning he wouldn't be willing to kill him immediately? He would give his followers YEARS to kidnap people and commit terrorist attacks to set Osama free?

Didn't he have his whole prostrate cut out last year? Do we even know what is in Kerry's medical records? Somehow, I don't think this is a healthy person. His sagging face (between botox injections) are a giveaway.

As VP, Edwards would probably take a temporary leave of absence as VP to defend Saddam or Osama.

Kerry and Convention speakers tried six or seven different slogans. A couple were even stolen from previous GWB/Cheney speeches.

Kerry and Convention didn't get a positive hit out of any of them. Their jingoism just didn't jingle.

Kerry still doesn't have a slogan. Kerry has plans, though. A plan for this. A plan for that.

No details--they'll come after the election. No specifics--Kerry's been too busy.

Hey, snowboarding, bowling, windsurfing, botoxing, dental work, biking, more biking, more photo-ops, too busy for intel briefing, these take up a lot of Kerry's time.

I suppose that OBL will sit in a US prison for 2-4 years before trial, 2-4 years at trial, and another 10-15 years on appeal? All the while we are providing a kidney transplant for him?

hanoi john is ANTI-DEATH PENALTY and plans a moratorium on the Federal death penalty. Which means WE the taxSERFS will have to foot the bill for him for the rest of his life.

AND the state level death penalties will also get the kabosh put on them by his black robe tyrants...stroke of the pen, law of the land!

Which is why there was NO talk of capital punishment in his plank, and gun control wasn't mentioned either.

hanoi john defended dukakis' furlough program from the GOP attack after willie horton was released onto the public. hanoi john was in the senate then.

Before heading west on their whirlwind "Believe" tour, John/John decided to go to the same hairstylist to have their hair done, hoping it would "WOW" the crowds, but most people who saw it thought they had gone to the dogs.

All bump, but no bounce. Looks like Kerry's speech turns away voters according to Rasmussen.
