Canada's Border Guards Plan Tax-Free Protest Weekend, Post Says July 31 (Bloomberg) -- Canadian border guards won't collect duty and taxes on goods that consumers bring from the U.S. on the Labor Day holiday weekend in September as part of a protest over wages, the National Post reported, citing unnamed customs officers in different provinces.

Ron Moran, national president of the Customs Excise Union, which represents 4,200 Canadian customs officers, said the plan comes from members and isn't officially sanctioned, the paper said. Goods for commercial importation won't be included in the tax exemption, the paper said.

I suspect what the individual border guards want to do is illegal; otherwise, their union would be in front of the plan.

What would you think if the border agents decided not to check the terrorist database out of protest Labor Day weekend because they think they are paid too little?

Down further in the story, it says:

The border guards, who have been in a dispute for four years with the government over their salaries, are planning to delay travelers this weekend with ``overly'' careful inspections, the paper said.

Just another reason to continue boycotting Canada. I used to visit Vancouver, B.C., quite frequently, but not anymore. Most of the time, I sailed through the border stop, however twice I was subjected to ridiculous searches of myself and my vehicle. They even had me take off my shoes once! And after one of the searches, I re-entered my vehicle only to see all the contents of my glove compartment were left dumped on the front passenger seat and floor. The last thing those pigs deserve is a raise in salary.

Apples and oranges. You know that, so why bring it up?

I disagree. Too bad Canada doesn't have a Ronald Reagan-like figure in charge up there to fire these jackasses for trying to dictate how many hoser dollars they make each year.

The border guards need to either show up for work and do their jobs or not show up at all.

Because I don't think they are apples and oranges. Union employees should not refuse to do any part of their job as part of a pay dispute. Even if that includes collecting customs duties.

I really dislike unions but can't you at least support not collecting taxes that would probably go to some welfare Queen ?

No. The ends don't justify the means. I support the citizens of Canada voting to lower taxes and end payments to welfare queens, not an illegal action by border guards to get a pay hike.

This sets the kind of dangerous precedent that nobody can afford to have continue. Since when do low ranking people like guards start deciding which part of their jobs they are going to do and which part they are not going to do. What, it's okay to do this because "they have a good reason". The people who flew the planes into the WTC had a "good reason" too. Does that make it okay? Where does it end once it gets started?

I'm sure there is a Laffer Curve type of relationship here.

Your hard-ass anti-union stance aside, a duty to national security is an apple, collecting more money to feed the beast of big government is definitely an orange. Please, tell me you see the difference.
