The trends are all toward Republicans
Minneapolis (Red) Star Tribune / Scripps Howard News Service ^ | August 2, 2004 | JAMES K. GLASSMAN

Watching John Kerry give his acceptance speech, I was reminded of Richard Nixon. Kerry not only said he would make short shrift of an annoying war - but he also appeared shifty and sweaty, jowly and sallow, bobbing and weaving in front of the camera and "racing furiously," as the Washington Post's Tom Shales put it, through his text, as though he wanted to get finished in time to get to Locke-Ober's for supper. No wonder there was barely a bounce.

On the other hand, maybe I don't know what I am talking about. The headline on a Salon.com article reviewing the speech said, "The pundits on Kerry: He nailed it." Oh, well. Instant political analysis is not my strong suit. I am sick of it - of the talk about who'll win West Virginia, the hair-splitting polling, the speculation over whether a terror attack will help George Bush. This is short-termism. It misses the forest for the trees.

Re: the reference to Salon.com. Now there's a media source worth ignoring.

I'm really looking forward to the increasingly likely "progressive" freakout this fall.

You won't be able to buy that kind of entertainment.

The 'Rats are shoveling $h*t against the tide. They have to rely more and more on fringe groups that are further and further out of the mainstream for money and power and have to work harder than ever to hide what they are really about.

Better start your sleeper DU accounts now while there hot so you can do hit and run 'neener-neener' attacks on election day.

"today, the parties are roughly even."

Then why do the pollster seem to over weight democrats?

Hail to the King Baby.

I'm not. WHEN Bush wins and we add maybe 1-2 Senate seats and slightly expand our House seats, the libs are going to get dangerous, perhaps violently so. It will go from amusing to disturbing.

Yup. Its hard to believe there are many Repubbies in St. Paul but I'm beginning to believe it. Maybe it was 3M's announcement that future manufacturing would be located outside the nosebleed tax areas of the Twin Cities.

The truth is that something profound has been happening in America since 1980 - a massive political sea change. Even if Kerry wins this time, it's hard to see the tide reversing.

Hence, the Stealth Convention.

No booing of the Boy Scouts.

Was the term "gay" even mentioned ?

Lots of flags, but no reference to the fact that the ideas that it stands for are being fought for in places like Afghanistan and Iraq.

This is a Party that Dare Not Speak Its Ideology.

The Democrat Party is in decline. This is what makes me feel better knowing Hillary won't run until 2008, four more years of their party disintegrating.

Yep. The Weathermen and Symbionese Liberation Army will make a comeback.

If GW wins this election decisively it will signal the end of the anti-war left, they will never be allowed near the levers of power in the Democrat party.

Agreed. The war on terror may become a battle with two fronts.

They are home during the day watching Jerry Springer so they can answer the phone. Republicans have jobs and lives.
