Kerry Pledges to Honor Indian Treaties
08/08 9:58p CDT GALLUP, N.M. (AP)

John Kerry pledged at an intertribal Indian powwow Sunday evening to honor treaties and consult on national issues like health care.

"When I take the oath of office as president of the United States," he told an estimated 5,000 people at Red Rock State Park, "I will uphold the law of the land, and that includes treaties and the special relationship that exists between the United States and the Indian nations."

Kerry, standing in the center of a circular outdoor amphitheater surrounded on three sides by the majestic red rocks, pledged to arrange a posting in the White House for an American Indian to "advise me on how we can respect the (Indian) nations."

"It is a sad fact that one-third of native Americans lack health insurance, and it's a sad fact the life expectancy of native Americans is lower than other groups," he said. "We spend more money on the health care of federal prisoners than we do on the health care of native Americans."

Kerry said he would see to it that the head of the Indian Health Service participates in formulating national health care.

After his appearance in Gallup, Kerry's campaign train chugged west for a midnight appearance at Flagstaff, Ariz.

Earlier, in an interview on his train in Colorado, Kerry said Americans should do more to protect themselves against terrorism by setting up neighborhood watch groups.

"If we do that to protect ourselves against vandals or a burglary, why would we not do it to protect ourselves against a terrorist?" Kerry asked during the interview, in which he was joined by running mate John Edwards.

Huh???

"We spend more money on the health care of federal prisoners than we do on the health care of native Americans."

Well, you can blame that on the ACLU!!

Kerry said he would see to it that the head of the Indian Health Service participates in formulating national health care.

WOW!! Two strikes in one sentence: National health care and the Indian Health Service participation in formulating the national health care.

Sorry, I cannot say more! I cannot type as I am laughing to much and my eyes are full of tears!!!!!

Can somebody explain to me how the Indian "nations" can avoid US Sovereignty and do things like build casinos that spit in the face of state laws to the contrary, but these tribal members can still vote in elections for the United States of America, a land that they (in effect) only recognize via treaty?

Good question. Another one would be if they are sovereign nations, why should the citizens of the nation of the United States pay their health costs?

"John Kerry pledged at an intertribal Indian powwow Sunday evening to honor treaties "

Frenchie better read those treaties before taking this tack much further.

He's likely to be pledging to take away major chunks of the country from people who think they own them and giving them to Indians who got hornswoggled out of them generations ago.

As a registered member of the Lakota nation, I would like to honor Senator Kerry's proposal by giving him an Indian name. How about "Lying Sacajawea?"

BOHICA!

Great White (wannabe) Father speaks with forked tongue.

Or is he going to take the Black Hills away from the Whites now and give them back, now that most of the yellow metal is gone?

And just in time for the 'Voyage of Discovery' bicentennial.

Well, he could give Manhattan back and I wouldn't mind, although Hillary! might have some objections.

Okay all you non-indians who live west of the Allegheny Mountains-- prepare to be deported to points east. Of course, I suppose we'll have to start small, say Oklahoma and the Black Hills of South Dakota.

"It is a sad fact that one-third of native Americans lack health insurance, and it's a sad fact the life expectancy of native Americans is lower than other groups," he said. "We spend more money on the health care of federal prisoners than we do on the health care of native Americans."

Depending on the treaty arrangements, Native Americans are supposed to be provided health care through Indian Health Services, a part of the BIA. If two thirds of Native Americans have seen fit to obtain health insurance, and life expectancy is still lower than for other groups, this exposes Indian Health for the deadly Government boondoggle it has always been.

Definitely not a case for government provided health care.

To obtain this health care you must first be turned down by welfare and other sources before you get IHS coverage. Either way, you are at the mercy of Government bureaucrats, who often regard treaty benefits as welfare gimmies rather than the result of solemn agreements between two nations at the cessation of hostilities.
