Downstate Republicans get first look at Keyes at fair's GOP day

August 20, 2004Downstate republicans at the state fair in Springfield are getting their first taste of Alan Keyes, and it is quite a mouthful filled with fiery rhetoric, provocative proposals, nonstop interviews and handshaking. The crowd is relatively small compared to the democrats Wednesday, and at least half of the state's top republicans aren't there. But the candidate from Maryland is campaigning like he's been there forever.

Republican Senate candidate Alan Keyes visited the state fair in Springfield for the first time with two of his three children. Trying out the food-- Italian sausage, not a corn dog- touching the voters, many of them like-minded conservatives on Republican Day at the Illinois State Fair, and taunting his democratic opponent Barack Obama in a fiery speech to a small but enthusiastic luncheon rally.

"Everything suggests that he rejects the principles of Lincoln, the statesmanship of Lincoln, and does not represent the heart of the people in the land of Lincoln," said Keyes. "There is not one county and there is not one vote that I concede to my opponent. I'm glad to be new because I will not accept those attitudes."

"I thought he knew what he was talking about but, you know, actions speaks louder than words," said Wayne Stevens, Cass County republicans.

"I just appreciate the fact that he's standing up for American values and he's going to uphold the constitution and we're going to vote for him," said Beth Rogers, Springfield republican.

"He is a very bright, articulate, energetic, and for you guys, entertaining candidate," said Former Governor Jim Edgar.

The former governor is, however, one of the only moderate republican leaders here in Springfield today, and he's not promising to do much for the Keyes campaign.

"My commitments, to be very truthful, are going to be the president, the president, the president," said Edgar.

In addition, downstate republicans who agree with Keyes on most conservative issues are nevertheless uncomfortable with his reparations proposal to exempt African Americans from paying federal income taxes for a few years to make up for the economic devastation of slavery.

"That I'm not too happy with, because I feel that's a lot better off than we would be in Africa today," said Robert "Dog" Connell, (R) Williamson County Chairman.

"I make no apologies whatsoever for speaking for what is, in fact, justice. I think it's time that we tried a way that instead of being about handouts is about making sure we support people when they are working," said Keyes.

For the record, Barack Obama opposes the tax amnesty, and he is also against cash reparations. He does, however, support government programs aimed at leveling the playing field and helping blacks get ahead. Those programs are called bureaucratic bungles by Alan Keyes.

Hmm... Alan Keyes produly wears a sticker promoting the candidate who RINOs say he "hates"

$100 bucks say you NEVER see Arlen Specter with a Bush sticker, of course the RINOs don't mind when he loudly attacks Bush.

Hmmm...

I've always enjoyed hearing Alan Keyes' spirited defense of family issues and conservative values. He's one of the most principled and articulate Conservative 'Pubbies around.

That being said, I still have this lingering fear every time I hear him speak, that he's absolutely out of his 'effing mind and should be under a doctor's care.

Signed,
Worried in NH

Well. Isn't this special. About 100,000 reasons come up to NOT vote for Alan Keyes, and only one reason to do so. If you do not vote for Dr. Keyes, then you WILL be represented in the US Senate by the son of a goatherder.

So how much damage can Barack Osama do in a mere four years? Carol Moseley Braun was a simple dupe compared to Obama. He is a slick piece of packaging, carefully nutured over the years, and he is going to make his mark early and hard. Unencumbered with the slave mentality of the vast majority of Americans of African descent, he will bring African Muslim tribal politics to the US Senate, and very little consciousness of American history.

Fortunately, Obama will not be in the Senate very long. He will resign when the Democrat ticket gets elected in 2008. And keep in mind, who will be on the top of the ticket.

If you had the power to go back in time, say 1923, and see to it that Adolf Hitler would always remain a small-time thug in the slums of Munich, would you do it? Not eliminate him, just keep him from ever being significant. Here is the opportunity to change history, in 2017 and beyond.

Interesting analysis of Obama- I didn't know that much about him. As far as Keyes reps proposal - that is also very interesting - exempt from taxes - but that target group is typically paying zero taxes now or actually netting positive. Becoming exempt would cause most of them to stop receiving the net positive cash flow from the tax system - this would of course lead to an interesting discussion of it actually passed and occurred.

Perhaps Keyes is trying to make a point--they don't pay taxes now and reparations are therefore already being paid in a roundabout way.

I think the point is, Obama will only be in the Senate for four years before he runs for President in 2008.

Purely from the perspective of "strategery," Alan's position on reparations puts Obama on the defensive again. Obama's position comes across as "old school," even reactionary. Alan comes across as forward-thinking.

Noooooooo... I'm shocked, SHOCKED!

I'm sure Alan will return the favor when he's elected.
