XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX TUE AUG 24, 2004 11:09:31 ET XXXXX

KERRY PHONES SWIFT BOAT FOES

**Exclsuive**

Dem presidential hopeful John Kerry personally phoned anti-Kerry swift boat vets, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

Kerry reached out to Robert "Friar Tuck" Brant Cdr., USN (RET) Sunday night, just hours after former Sen. Bob Dole publicly challenged Kerry to apologize to veterans.

Brant was skipper of the #96 and # 36 boat and spent time with Kerry in Anm Thoi. Kerry and Brant slept in the same quarters, and Brant used to put Kerry back to be at night when Kerry was sleepwalking.

Brant received a call from Kerry at his home in Virginia while he was watching the Olympics on TV.

The call lasted 10 minutes, sources tell DRUDGE.

KERRY: "Why are all these swift boat guys opposed to me?"

BRANT: "You should know what you said when you came back, the impact it had on the young sailors and how it was disrespectful of our guys that were killed over there.

[Brant had two men killed in battle.]

KERRY: "When we dedicated swift boat one in '92, I said to all the swift guys that I wasn't talking about the swifties, I was talking about all the rest of the veterans."

Kerry then asked if he could meet Brant -- man to man -- face to face.

Brant declined the invite, explaining that Kerry was obviously not prepared to correct the record on exactly what happened during Vietnam and what happened when Kerry came back.

Hope these calls turn out the same as Kerry's call to Dole and the one Kerry made to Admiral Hoffman. LOL

If Kerry really calls the Swifties then he has legitimized them even to the NYT!

Kerry must have been "confused" when he went outside the chain of command to grab a Purple Heart that was later the basis of his early ticket home (snicker). His memories of Vietnam aren't always accurate, but they are always self serving.

Is he calling to ball them out or to beg them to stop?

Why doesn't he release his complete naval record?

Why doesn't he sue for libel?

I wonder if he will pull a Clinton and apologize with a tear in his eye for the ignorance of youth and bad judgements, hoping to garner pity and, like Clinton, become more popular because he had the guts to apologize... I think I will puke now..

Of course Kerry's first PH was erroneously awarded.

Kerry knows it, Kerry's C.O. knows it, Kerry's crew mates know it, I know it and anyone who served one day in combat in Nam know it!!!

Kerry is either a self-admitted war criminal or a pathological liar and a lying traitor!
Either way, Kerry is "Unfit for Command"

Kelly

He wants to make a deal. Kerry will apologize to the Vets about war crimes and admit that his first PH may have been in error. In return, the SBVFT will stop attacking him.

Or Kerry threatened law suits and personal ruin for all associated with these attacks.

Too little too late for an apology. That should have happened at the beginning of the campaign. He has called this a swear job. It is hard top walk away from that.

Is Kerry going to apologize...... I don't think he has it in him.

He will if he thinks it will help him politically. He will be speaking to the American Legion soon. He will use this as a forum to appeal to all Vietnam veterans to come together and stop opening past wounds. He will ask them to look to the future.

This is a pattern.

Kerry phoned Admiral Hoffman when he learned the Admiral was upset about the book "Tour of Duty" and offered to expunge negative comments about him in order to placate him:

When some media was nosing around the VVAW activities and found witnesses who placed Kerry at the "assassination" meeting in Kansas City in November 1971, John Hurley started calling those witnesses and wanted them to adjust their memories:

And last weekend William Rood with the Chicago Tribune said he'd been contacted by the Kerry campaign and asked for words of support.
