EU's Solana says causes of terrorism need tackling

04 September 2004

Tackling terrorism requires addressing its causes and not just its results, the EU's top foreign policy chief Javier Solana said in a newspaper interview published Saturday following the bloody end to Russia's deadly school siege.

"We (Europeans) believe the problem of terrorism must be resolved not only by dealing with its effects but also by concentrating on its causes," Solana told the Corriere della Sera.

"There are old wounds in some geographical regions which as long as they are not healed will continue to create a fertile ground for terrorism to develop," he added, citing the Arab-Israeli conflict.

On Chechnya, he said the 25-nation bloc's position was clear. "In Chechnya, we have to find a formula of a political solution."

And he warned of the need to look beyond what he termed Chechen terrorism.

"We are thinking also of public displays by Chechen people who contest the climate in which they have had to live for a long time," Solana said.

On Friday, the EU refused to rush to judgment on how Russian authorities acted in the bloody end to the three-day hostage crisis in North Ossetia, but said it wanted Moscow's explanation of the tragedy.

Rescuers have recovered 210 bodies from the school in Beslan where there was a bloody standoff between hostage-takers and federal troops who stormed the building on Friday, Interfax reported.

About 1,000 hostages, many of them chilren had been held by militants said to be demanding independence for Chechnya.

Those wacky Euro's. Always looking for weaselly political solutions for things which can't be solved through talk. They are the poster children for the old adage about following the same approach repeatedly and expecting different result. And to think, they used to refer to the USA as "The Children" because they thought we we naive. I guess their problem is age related dementia.

"...we have to find a formula of a political solution."

Hasn't worked. Won't work---yet. First, you have to go in and beat the hell out of them (attitude adjustment, aka Germany and Japan of the early last century). Then you give them the option of joining the civilized world in a civilized manner, or get the hell beat out of them again....and again...and again.

They only understand strength through power and force. They perceive appeasement as weakness. They will fight against enemies they perceive as weak.

EU's top foreign policy chief Javier Solana would have applauded Chamerlain and decried Churchill.

You are exactly right. The US and Russia will probably be working more closely together from now on to fight World War IV. God bless all of our soldiers and their families.

"Solana can go rot"

Yup! These socialist pukes nurture and promote palestinian terrorism and then act piously surprised when there are terrorist acts. When are we going to wake up to the fact that certain European nations are waging a proxy terrorist war against us?

Hey Solana, quit supporting terrorism and maybe there will be less of it -jerk!

I would love to be the one to put a bullet into Arafat's diseased skull.

Mecca + Medina = 2 sheets of glass. Causes addressed.
