Retired Maj. General Hodges, Killian's supervisor at the Grd, tells ABC News that he feels CBS misled him about the documents they uncovered. According to Hodges, CBS told him the documents were "handwritten" and after CBS read him excerpts he said, "well if he wrote them that's what he felt."

BYRON YORK, NATIONAL REVIEW ONLINE, THE CORNER:

RATHER NEWS [Byron York] The major news in CBS anchorman Dan Rather's defense of the alleged Bush National Guard documents is the revelation that CBS News does not have the original documents purportedly written by Bush's commanding officer Lt. Col. Jerry B. Killian. Rather reported tonight that the network's document consultant "believes they are real, but is concerned about exactly what is being examined by some of the people now questioning the documents, because deterioration occurs each time a document is reproduced, and the documents being analyzed outside of CBS have been photocopied, faxed, scanned, and downloaded, and are far removed from the documents CBS started with, which were also photocopies."

That last clause is critical. Document experts say it would be relatively easy to determine the authenticity of a typewritten original; a typewriter makes a small indentation into the paper with each strike, and those indentations can be studied in great detail. But a photocopy is another thing. There's no way to analyze the physical aspects of the typewritten words, nor is there a way to analyze the actual signature. In fact, an image of a legitimate signature could have been placed onto a computer-generated document and then printed out and photocopied. The news is that CBS based its report on photocopies, making it difficult to determine whether or not the documents are in fact authentic.

That might explain the handwriting expert IF Rather is setting us up. But why type a document to look like the real thing if the original is handwritten? This makes no sense.

No, that can't be because Rather spent all that time this evening explaining how typewriters in 1972 could do superscript and blah blah blah..

He can't come back now and say it was hand written.

Not to mention Killian's son reported in the hanniryt radio show that that CBS refused to follow up on suggestions that he had made to them for knowledgeable people to interview. The women doing the leg work for Rather actually told him one of the people he had suggested was pro-Bush and essentiually useless (meaning he could not be used in the report).

According to Hodges, CBS told him the documents were "handwritten" and after CBS read him excerpts he said, "well if he wrote them that's what he felt."

He deserves a ton of mail,
I am just sending him the above.

"Actually, they told him they WERE handwritten."

That might explain the handwriting expert IF Rather is setting us up. But why type a document to look like the real thing if the original is handwritten? This makes no sense.

And why then add a forged signature to the memos? No, there were no handwritten memos.

They do not understand what is going on here. Certainly there is a point of view, but if it can't be defended it doesn't survive for long. I love this place.

Ditto!

Now if we can get ABC to turn on NBC, Kitty Litter Kelly and al Quadie Couric!

How old would Hodges be? If he retired in 1971 at say age 55, he would be 88.

Think of the consternation going on at CBS right now.  "Either we lose our future jobs, or John Kerry does."

Couldn't be happening to a nicer bunch of people now could it!

Keep up the good work. ABC did a lousy job of coveering it yesterday and I never heard the story on CNN, but tonight I heard the story covered on Headlines News and they actually did a fairly decent job.

Wae have to keep this story alive, because the press is trying to bury it.

I think ABC has decided to try and keep a little credibility for itself and for the MSM and not go down with the CBS ship.

Plus, they may have realized it's over for Kerry and have decided to bail.
