Statement by the President of CBS News, Andrew Heyward:
"We established to our satisfaction that the memos were accurate or we would not have put them on television. There was a great deal of coroborating [sic] evidence from people in a position to know. Having said that, given all the questions about them, we believe we should redouble our efforts to answer those questions, so that's what we are doing."
There is NOTHING in that statement of value.
They jerked us around for SIX HOURS just to tell us to go f--- ourselves. I for one am not amused.
I mean, I at least expected them to MANEUVER somehow, to try to CHANGE their position (which is a really, really bad position!). Nope.
I think what happened is that they there were going to come out with a statement, vetted by the CBS lawyers, earlier in the day. And then there was the mother of all internal battles over the memo content with the CBS lawyers on one side and Dan Rather on the other. The clock kept ticking and ticking and ticking (insert "60 Minutes clock here"). 12:00 passed. 3:00 passed. 5:00 passed. And finally Heyward says, "damnit!!! We need to put SOMETHING out. Here [type][type][type] use this. Damn it!! I want some *%@# answers!!!
If he had admitted they were forged, they would no longer be able to protect their "source", yes?
Or Martha Stewart. Maybe that's the reason she wants to get her prison term over with. So she can return credibility back to the CBS Evening News.

It's starting to look like John F'in Kerry himself gave them the memos.
This is a ploy to see if the furor over this dies down.Fold the incident into the lexicon: refer to every forgery as a "Rather Memo". Then your grandkids will remember it.
That lying POS should be asked to leave by the share holders while there is still something left there.

Good point. This was a thought out and calculated statement. Probably very lawyerly in its choice of words.
What questions are they referring to? Questions about the authenticity of the documents or questions about the false information that was in them?

I think we should convince GWB to voluntarily go on 60 minutes "LIVE" (not taped) and answer any questions that Dan Rather wants to ask in regard to what GWB knows about the AUTHENTICY of the forged documents.
In return GWB can ask Dan Rather any question that he wants to ask in regard to where Rather got them.

Looks like CBS has been listening to all the DUers and Dems who wrote in to them. They just signed their death warrant for their News station. What idiots!
That is just absolutely LAME. They said ZERO - NOTHING. And if they'd have said it prior to 3pm, RUSH would have destroyed them on it. They parsed and dodged hoping to forstall the hit for another day. CBS is toast. These shiesters all need shown the door. And beings as they can't comport themselves properly, hopefully, congress will do it for them.
cBS: We were going to investigate before we weren't going to investigate and now, about a week later and after delaying this announcement for the last 6 hours, we are really, really going to investigate...but the information in the original memos will continue to be valid (just so you know.)
Oh, and since neithe the WH or Bush-Cheney have responded we know the information is true. Thank you very much. We will get back to you in a few weeks - maybe.
