The little girl is holding what is left of her sign and the jerk next to her is hold the pieces of the rest. It is more than stretch to assume it was anything other than how the AP reported it.
Appreciate your call to fairness - you are obviously a good person. But your sesne of fairness is misplaced in this instance.
