UN Monitoring of US Elections

Posted on 09/16/2004 10:49:50 PM PDT by TwoWolves

I hear that the State Department has invited the UN to send a team to monitor the US elections. I am new to the political arena, and so I have to ask, is this something that they have the legal authority to do, or is this something that only Congress should be allowed to do, if it is done at all? Finally, isn't this in some way surrendering our national sovereignty to outsiders? It seems to me that with all the attention being paid to national security these days, this move makes absolutely no sense.

You heard right. Thanks to the spinelessness of our State Department, we have surrendered our sovereignty to our admitted enemies.

Our own government has lost sight that The United States of America taught the world how a Republic is run. But for some reason, now we're supposed to be under their watchful eye? My sweet aching American ass.

I'm not sure, but I think this is something that should be pursued. I don't believe the Euro-twits and the Communist/Socialist/Fascist nations are fit to judge our elections.

Finally, isn't this in some way surrendering our national sovereignty to outsiders?

Yes, it is. Thanks to the idiots in the State Department, our nation can now be thrown into literal chaos if/when the Euro-twits refuse to "certify" our election results.

It seems to me that with all the attention being paid to national security these days, this move makes absolutely no sense.

I concur. And whoever assented to this idiocy should be run out of office and labelled as traitors. PERIOD.

The U.N. has no business involved in our politics so I agree, anyone who does this should not only be run out of office and labelled as traitors, but should be charged with sedition for trying to overthrow the gov't. [/rant]

It is stupid, but nothing new. The UN has sent monitors for US elections for several years. There were two monitoring the Florida recount, if I remember correctly. There's probably a lot one can find on google about the history of this nonsense, but I'm too tired right now.

I agree, the SD has been spineless in this issue, but in the end, what can the paper tiger UN do about it even if their "monitors" contest our results?

By merely contesting the results, the U.N. will hand their pals in the Traitor Democrat Party their foil to bellyache that the election was "stolen again."

Hell, without the U.N., the Demoncrats have whined for the past 4 years that Bush "stole" the election. Just imagine their anti-American sedition if the U.N. legitimizes their insanity.

"I hear that the State Department has invited the UN to send a team to monitor the US elections."

Actually the only article regarding foreign monitoring comes from a private organization who has invited a team of international lefties to come to the United States, specifically Florida, to monitor the elections. It is not sanctioned by any government agency.

Of course those international monitors will try to enter some polling places in Florida, be denied access, then hold a press conference wanting to know what Governor Bush is trying to hide.

True. But I think no matter the results (I'm certain W's going to win), the Dims will claim the election was stolen and try to sue on some technicality or another, and rest of the world will go along with it, with or without the UN's verdict (as they have with the 2000 election). I surf on a lot of European boards, and most of the posters I've encountered have totally bought the Michael Moore BS....

I wonder why they keep saying 'monitor', when it's appropriately labelled 'observe'.

To monitor implies the ability to intercede to "correct" it.

Ah. Maybe the press does this to inflame people and sell newspapers/airtime?

If the Republicans play this right, the UN "Inspectors" will be besieged with accusations of Demonrat vote fraud, polling irregularities, illegal registrations, etc. The pattern of Demonrat election criminality, particularly during the last election should be protested, and demands made that the UN prevent this during the current election.

If they do that, and then *insist* that the UN inspectors monitor for such "goings-on" - and make sure the inspectors themselves are monitored - the Demonrats AND the UN scum will end up in a really, *really* unenviable position. They'll wish they'd *never* asked for this.

But you may be right... the State Department may have simply caved.

"Are you paid for the trash you write freak?"

You obviously have me confused for a close personal family member. I can assure you that's not possible...my family has stayed within the human race.
