In Rush to Air, CBS Quashed Memo Worries
Washington Post ^ | 09/20/2004 | Howard Kurtz, Michael Dobbs

In the early-morning hours of Sept. 8, Dan Rather was preparing to fly to Washington for a crucial interview in the Old Executive Office Building, but torrential rain kept him in New York.

White House communications director Dan Bartlett had agreed to talk to "60 Minutes," but only on condition that the CBS program provide copies of what were being billed as newly unearthed memos indicating that President Bush had received preferential treatment in the National Guard. The papers were hand-delivered at 7:45 a.m. CBS correspondent John Roberts, filling in for Rather, sat down with Bartlett at 11:15.

Your scenario doesn't make sense given Barnes had already created a video in May that contained the same info he told Rather on 60 Minutes. 60 Minutes needed the documents to add more drama along with Barnes' dramatic confession. Now, was there a plan hatched way back in the spring? Perhaps.

For the record, the footage for these clips was shot this past May. We conducted a sit-down interview on Tuesday, May 25th, and then, almost as an afterthought, we taped his speech at our MeetUp on Thursday May 27th. The clips were edited together over the following month and posted on the morning of Friday, June 25th. They've been online ever since

Mary Mapes is behind this fevered rush job to bring this to television. She's the producer of this segment looking for a big notch on her belt. She had a lot more to gain from it's success than Dan Rather. Mapes is working her way up the CBS food chain.

Barnes contacted Rather "during the Republican convention" (Aug 30-Sept 2).

They said something like "in the middle of the Republican convention" so it's almost certainly either Aug 31 or Sept 1.

Sept 1st is my guess.
Why..?
Because, wasn't that Zell's night...?
Didn't Kerry try to claim that Cheney called him "unfit for office" (same think Knox later said of Bush)..?

I think it was that night that was the breaking point.
I think it was after Zell and Dick that Kerry's campaign decided to go nuclear and contact Rather. "That's it! We've had enough! We're GONG TO TAKE THE GLOVES OFF!!" Isn't that what Kerry's campaign suddenly promised right around that time..?

Their moves were all so obvious.

Exactly, the media can apologize for the document not being properly examined.

If you read the article, you see that they can't even do that. Most, nay, ALL of CBS's authentication experts said the documents had serious problems.

TIn-foil hat time, but maybe this is the journalistic equivalent of a suicide bombing. Rather and CBS blow up, taking the Kerry campaign with them. I still can't figure out any possible way that can help the DNC, or to further DEM/socialist agenda, so I guess I need to take my tinfoil in for a tightening.

Where is Barnes from..? does he live within a 125 mile radius of that Abilene Kinkos..?
Who says it had to be Burkett that faxed the memos..?

Barnes is based in Austin, about 300 miles from Abilene. There's no reason to believe he is the faxer.

Previously, I suspected that Mapes was probably the one who faxed the documents from Kinko's back to CBS, having picked up the hard copies from Burkett at his home in Baird. But it now appears that Burkett was faxing them to her.

They also said that they GOT the memos from the White House. Now we know that they didn't.

Actually, we've known all along that the trail went CBS -> WH -> CBS and others. CBS used the deceptive term "released" on pupose, to lend a patina of authenticity of origin that just flat out wasn't there.

It's all Bush's fault!!

Reminds me of Clinton after he was caught lying about illegal campaign contributions: "It's the Republicans' fault! Make them stop, so I can stop! Waaaaaaaahhhhh!"

and send that excellent diagram to the WaPo 'investigative" team, AND to CBS, with a link to this post - maybe they can learn a few things...

I agree with you on all points. During the Clinton WH, the MSM would have written that the WH was too busy working on the people's business.

Well, sure, Barnes had decided to change his story sometime back. We know that already. He told his daughter his plot, remember..?

The difference is he made some little video of no consequence to go on the internet. Going prime-time with CBS 60 Minutes is a bit different. You gotta have something to bring. He wouldn't go to CBS with it if he didn't have some hard "evidence" to bring along first.

Not even 60 Minutes would run a story based on 100% eyewitness accounts and hearsay.

Anyone can make an accusation (which is what CBS has been reduced to now). But an accusation with no proof is worthless and wouldn't have seen air.

Barnes had already created a video in May that contained the same info he told Rather on 60 Minutes.

If he had already created a video making these allegations, then why had he not volunteered to repeat them with Dan Rather earlier.

The key here is not Barnes willingness to make the allegations (which are opposite to what he testified under oath in 1999, anyway). The key is Barnes willingness to go public on CBS with Dan Rather.

That didn't happen until after Burkett had "reassembled the file"...

Burkett started the rumor and Mapes has been chasing it for 5 years. Finally, he just manufactured the evidence she was looking for. So funny how it all comes full circle.

Too bad we don't have one of those Star Trek space-based penal colonies yet. Love to see Mapes, Rather, and the rest of these pissants doing hard time on an asteroid mining colony far away from the rest of us.

'On August 25, he posted the message that "we have reassembled [Bush's] files". '

we need to find that web site, where he was posting all his 'veiled' comments and suggestions that there was something in the works...
