Thank goodness this isn't the Mammoth Lakes area, although when the 5.5 hit earlier today that was my first thought.

I hope me and mine are long gone when Yellowstone erupts.

I just hope the Yellowstone caldera won't be erupting anytime soon! The Yellowstone supervolcano eruption would spew potentially over 1,000 cubic miles of volcanic ash into the atmosphere and could pretty much plunge the Northern Hemisphere into nuclear winter darkness for over a year and substantially darken the skies of the Southern Hemisphere, too. It could end up killing a huge fraction of all life on Earth as the darkness will severely disrupt the food chain for all lifeforms on the planet. A possible 70-75% decimation of all life on Earth wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.

Scientists who have studied the Toba supervolcano eruption in Indonesia from 75,000 years ago noted that it killed off the vast majority of higher lifeforms on Earth and came very close to causing homo sapiens sapiens (modern humans) to becoming extinct.
