Kerry Pulls Campaign Ads From Four States

Sep 22, 5:48 PM (ET)

By RON FOURNIER

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bowing to political realities, Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry has canceled plans to begin broadcasting television commercials in Arizona, Arkansas, Louisiana and the perennial battleground of Missouri.

The decision to shrink his political playing field reduces Kerry's strategic options - at least for now - in the homestretch of the campaign. George W. Bush won all four states in 2000, and Kerry can't win the White House without taking a state or two from the Republican incumbent.

While pulling back from some states that Bush carried, Kerry is still strongly competing in several GOP-leaning battlegrounds, including Ohio, Florida, Colorado and Nevada.

Ads were scheduled to begin airing Oct. 5 in Arizona, Arkansas, Louisiana and Missouri as part of a $5 million investment through Nov. 2, but campaign advisers concluded Kerry isn't doing well enough in the states to justify the cost.

The campaign, which has reserved commercial time in 20 states through Election Day, notified television stations in the four states that Kerry would not follow through on his plans for the first week of October.

Plans are still in place to air ads starting the second week of October, campaign officials said, but those will likely be tabled, too

Glad to see Arkansas is going to lean our way. That state always scares me. Arizona too.

Sire sounds like a winner if you ask me. Kerry is backing and filling.

Surrendering, as is his wont, as he would have us do. We will see how successful it is haha.

This is the typical pattern. Eventually, Kerry will be down to advertising in a handful of states, each of which he absolutely will have to win to have any chance. And he may pull out a couple of those. But to win the election, with his reduced possibilities, he will have to pull the equivalent of an inside straight, and it won't happen. Just like Dole. Just like Dukakis. Just like Mondale.

Arkansas never had a chance of going to Kerry from the start. (p.s. the abbreviation is AR instead of AK)

Well, sorta. RealClearPolitics' current summary of polls in those states has it thusly:

Ohio: Bush +6.5%
Florida: Bush +2.5%
Colorado: Bush +3.8%
Nevada: Bush +3.6%

Kerry is running his campaign just like he would fight the WOT.
1. It is someone else's fault.
2. Plead with our enemies to like us.
3. Pull out.

Buy the time we get to Nov. 2. Kerry will be running ads only in Washington D.C.

Does anyone have some footage of Kerry someplace online?

I need some of his flip-flopping on Iraq and also some windsurfing footage (not stills). I'm making a video of Kerry and I'll distribute it online when I'm done with it in a few days if I get what I need.

Oh and yeah, I made a great one of Dean after he exploded with the rebel-yell. Everyone loved that one. :) I'll have to re-upload it sometime but I'll need a new site to do that on since it was downloaded so often that I lost my account there. :/

If you do have footage (and/or a temp site), please email me: banagor@nerra.com. I don't check threads all that often so any replies here might be completely lost on me and I won't see your helpful replies. :/ So please email me and I'll reply pretty much in a matter of hours usually. :)

Thanks,

Banagor.

Even though this is by the not always truthful AP, I'll choose to believe that Kerry is bleeding.

Bush is way up in Arizona. Colorado is a big concern to me since Bush won it in '00.

Has anybody seen that new Kerry ad today? It mentions the beheadings of the two Americans this week. It is the most despicable, pathetic and disgusting ad so far. These are the same people that attacked Bush for politicizing 9-11. I hate Kerry more now than ever.

Missouri is telling and a bit of a microcosm of the nation. Two large cities, KC and St. Louis that vote liberal, somewhat more conservative suburbs, and a large rural population that is solidly pro GOP. The state has been trending Republican more as of late. Kerry pulling his ads here is terrific sign.

Speaking poker lingo, it appears J effin K is betting the farm (or are they calling that Heinz spread in PA a "ranch") on their version of "winning" Floridah again. It's all down to Floridah in their mind.

If Bush takes IA and WI, I don't believe it will matter if Kerry actually wins FL--unless that screwy change takes place in CO.
