God, this is an insipid article! Lots of handwringing, excuses, and navel-gazing.

But, then, it reflects the self-obsessed John Kerry well.

"I think his calculation was that he was going to play up his Vietnam "service", so that W would be unable to criticize his anti-war record. He kinda forgot about all those Vietnam veterans he slandered. "

I agree. He looked at Bush and thought that he didn’t have to worry about a military challenge. But when he heard of the SBVs book coming out, he failed to make the proper adjustments to his convention.

Irrespective of his medal exaggeration and war protest in the 70s, he shouldn’t be commander and chief just for that.

This dorkasaurus al-Qerry recalls EXACTLY nothing more to me than ''On The Waterfront'', to wit, and specifically:

Brando(to Rod Steiger):
'' It wasn't him, Charley! It was you. You remember that night in the Garden, you came down to my dressing room and said: "Kid, this ain't your night. We're going for the price on Wilson." You remember that? "This ain't your night!" My night! I coulda taken Wilson apart! So what happens? He gets the title shot outdoors in the ball park -- and whadda I get? A one-way ticket to Palookaville. You was my brother, Charley. You shoulda looked out for me a little bit. You shoulda taken care of me - just a little bit - so I wouldn't have to take them dives for the short-end money.''

Does anyone else here see al-Qerry in JUST this role (without, of course, the personal honour that Brando displayed later in the film)?

I can't even count the number of ways that sKerry has proved that he is "unfit".

As far as politics, my impression is that Kennedy has helped him quite a bit w/his political career in MA. He is just not used to running a race where Repubs are really competitive. CBSABCNBCNYTIMESWASHPOST have done their best to help, but to no avail.

What I don't understand is how the demokrats keep coming up with these unstable candidates anymore. It seems to be downhill too -- Clinton/Gore/Kerry.

In the aftermath of defeat, Mr. Kerry retreated, building model ships and planes and contemplating his options...

Yeah, supposedly the Kerry Campaign was going to save the "spontaneous" arrival of Jim Rassman at a campaign stop for the general campaign, but when things started getting tough against Howard Dean, they trotted Rassman out for the primaries, instead. Likewise, the forged memos would've probably been saved for use in October, but with the huge poll bounce Bush got out of the RNC, they likely decided to pull that stunt, earlier, in order to blunt his convention bounce. So yeah, something tells me that the Kerry Campaign's running out empty, and IF there is an October Surprise, it won't be coming from them. God knows that if there were something on Bush, the Democrats would've used it AGES ago, discounting the forged document route (Which is a plan they can't get away with pulling, AGAIN. At least not in the same election).

I think it helped John enormously that he did not get elected," said Thomas Vallely, a fellow Vietnam veteran who worked for Mr. Kerry then and is working for him now. "If he'd gone from Congress, from being a star, right to some higher job, he wouldn't have had the political skills he acquired going to law school, becoming a prosecutor, running for lieutenant governor and Senate," all in campaigns that seemed to involve what Mr. Vallely called "near-death experiences."

These great "political skills" of Kerry's seem to elude me. The "political skills" required for a Democrat to get elected in Mass are almost non-existent. Unless they start drooling at the mouth, if they can get nominated, they can get elected. As Kerry is finding out, this won't translate to the national stage.

---But as 1971 wore on, Mr. Kerry, who had been raising most of the group's money from celebrities like Jane Fonda and others, grew increasingly wary of the organization's more radical elements, and disillusioned with its anarchic nature. "I began to sense there were some folks out there on their own doing their stuff and calling it V.V.A.W.," he said this summer. "I just said, 'It's not my cup of tea.' And the agenda began to expand beyond antiwar to different this, social that, whatever. It just lost its way."

Mr. Kerry said he decided that politics, not protesting, would give him "greater strength and the ability to make something happen."

What he wanted was to end the war as quickly as possible, and he decided to run for Congress on an antiwar platform in 1972.---

Classic Kerry. He wanted to run in '70 but the slot was filled, so he runs in '72, and makes it sound like some momentous evolutionary growth had taken place.

embittered by the death of close friends in the war

El toro poo poo. Who? Kerry lost one guy he barely knew at school... BFD. In all Kerry's "combat," he tells the story of ONE dead ruff-puff (Regional Forces-Popular Forces, a Vietnamese militia led by US Special Forces) who was killed out of his sight and whose wrapped body was hauled on Kerry's PCF.

Unless the VC in the loincloth was a "close friend." Me, I just thought they were on the same side, is all.

They were on the same side, or else why would Kerry be honored here?
