THE DRAFT RUMOR WON'T DIE...

A reader forwarded this e-mail:

From: Hans Riemer, Rock the Vote [mailto:action@action.rockthevote.org] Sent: Tue 9/28/2004 19:53 To: [Kerry Spot Reader's name] Subject: You have been drafted!

You have been drafted!

This is not a real draft card, but real cards may be in the mail soon if the current situation doesn't improve.

As it is, our military is stretched almost to the breaking point trying to maintain troop levels in Iraq and around the world. If civil war erupts in Iraq, or if Pakistan, North Korea or other nations begin to pose new military threats, how would we meet the demand for troops?

Did you know that —

* It would only take two to three days for Congress and the President to authorize a draft and set the Selective Service System's plans in motion?
* Twenty-year-olds would be the first to be inducted?
* Women are very likely to be included in the next draft?

It's up to us to educate ourselves. In the event of a draft, we won't have much time to form an opinion. And with just 34 days left until the election and only a few days left before many state registration deadlines, we need to take a stand now by registering to vote:

Click here to get the facts about a potential draft, and to find out what you can do.

Do you have any idea how much respect Kerry would earn if he said something about this? Something like, "Folks, we're not going to have a draft. The all-volunteer military works a heck of a lot better than what we had before."

Sorry but this just needed a little truth in it

***That is was Democrats that proposed this in the House and the Senate. .S89 Title: A bill to provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes. Sponsor: Sen Hollings, Ernest F. [D-SC] (introduced 1/7/2003) Cosponsors (None) Related Bills: H.R.163 Latest Major Action: 1/7/2003 Referred to Senate committee. Status: Read twice and referred to the Committee on Armed Services.

***And in the House, it's HR 163 proposed and sponsored by the following : The sponsors of this legislation are: "Mr. RANGEL ( DEMONCRAT of New York) (for himself, Mr. MCDERMOTT (DEMONCRAT of Washington), Mr. CONYERS. (DEMONCRAT of Michigan) , Mr. LEWIS, ( DEMONCRAT of Georgia), Mr. STARK (DEMONCRAT of California) , and Mr. ABERCROMBIE (DEMONCRAT of Hawaii)"

Here's the e-mail I'm sending out and recommending it be forwarded.

Forward this to all you know and if they want, they can look it up. See what do all the people who are proposing we bring back the draft have in common and ask yourself, these guys want to bring back the draft, who are they voting for?

S.89 Title: A bill to provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes. Sponsor: Sen Hollings, Ernest F. (DEMOCRAT of South Carolina) [SC] (introduced 1/7/2003) Cosponsors (None) Related Bills: H.R.163 Latest Major Action: 1/7/2003 Referred to Senate committee. Status: Read twice and referred to the Committee on Armed Services.

I got one of those draft-scare emails. I replied to everyone on the list with this:

"If you want to vote against the party which has sponsored both the bills about the draft, you will have to vote Republican. That's right, the bills were sponsored and introduced by Democrats.

HR 163 - was introduced by New York Democrat Rep. Charles Rangel on Jan. 7, 2003

Senate bill is S. 89, was introduced by Democrat Ernest Hollings of South Carolina, also on Jan. 7, 2003."
