Kerry's Mystic Tan for the Magical Mystical Tour. "They're coming to take me away, take me away."

Consumer Team Report

Mystic Tan (WWLP; June 4, 2002) – Is it possible to get a perfect tan in seconds, without the harmful effects of the sun? This Consumer team report tells us of the results of the 22News Consumer Team test of the "Mystic Tan" technique.

Makers of 'Mystic Tan' say it applies a sunless tan safely, quickly, evenly... and in only 28 seconds. But we wanted to see for ourselves. Is it possible to get a UV free tan in seconds? With the push of a button, a fine mist of Aloe Vera, an instant bronzer, and a chemical called DHA are sprayed from nozzles onto your skin.

We wanted to know, is this stuff safe? Springfield dermatologist Dr. Stanley Glazer says, yes. He says the active chemical... DHA or Di-Hydroxy Acetone is what's found in most over-the- counter self-tanners. When it's applied to the skin it causes it to darken, like a stain. Dr. Glazer: “They darken the most superficial layer of the skin called the Stratum-Corneum. They're quite effective. They're very safe. There's a rare instance of people being sensitive or allergic to them, but it's quite uncommon.”

So what's the difference between 'Mystic Tan' and the kind you find in a bottle? Liz Piponidis: “It does go on streak-free so I like it a lot better than self-tanners.”

Owner of East Longmeadow's Island Tanning, Todd Witwer explained that users should wear nylon foot coverings, a hair cap and barrier cream on their hands. Todd Witwer: “It will mist you for 14 seconds on the front, turn around it'll mist you for 14 seconds on the back, then you get out, towel dry and about 6 hours later you're totally tan.”

But we wanted to check it out for ourselves... all at the expense of a potentially great tan. I gave mystic tan a run for its money... and ended up with a noticeable tan. And speaking of money, one of these sessions costs about $25... but Witwer says, compare that to a tanning bed, or the natural sun... both unhealthy and potentially dangerous to your skin. Todd Witwer: “It usually takes about 5 to 7 sessions to get a tan. With this it takes 1 session, the next day you've got a tan. We're trying to discourage tanning, but if people want the color, this is certainly a reasonable alternative I think.”

It has been 6 days since my Mystic Tan session and the color started to fade about a day ago. So Mystic Tan lives up to its claims. One Consumer Team observation; wearing the nylon footwear can cause a tan line there. So users may want to use barrier cream on the soles of their feet and toenails. And on a sidenote, Mystic Tan should not be used to create a base-tan before going in the sun. It will not protect you from sunburn.

Maybe some make-up gal will apply 100% acetone anhydride that can turn him white? It turns my fingers white. I am in the aerospace industry.

Then she can pour liquid nitrogen on him.

I put some LNO in a coffee cup when I was bored once. Put in a couple of grapes (which I love) into the liquid. You can pick them out with your fingers because your fingers are warm and develop vapor pressure around them that insulates them, momentarily. When you drop those frozen grapes on the floor, they shatter like glass marbles:) They are still at -270C when you pluck them out:) Be very fast:)

Beware of bored guys:)

Miraculous what those expensive, exclusive salons can do.

Hmmm, I thought from my chem studies that Di-Hydroxy Acetone always made a person's face seem longer by expanding the jaw area and that it also absorbed into the brain to make a person more wishy-washy in his thoughts? Good luck to comrade Kerry with his use of this chemical!!!!!!!!!!

Is that idiot obvious or what?? He says "I got a tan from playing football" but you can clearly see he has some greasy stuff on his face and one side is lighter than the other. I bet you tomorrow he`ll be back to his usual Lurch dull pasty white pallor.

Dude.

This reminds me of some skit where this college frat guy would drunken boast that he would dip his - well, "grapes" - in anything.

I made a mistake. Don't use LNO. I meant LN2. LNO is a rocket oxidizing propellent. Stay away from that.

How can you get a tan from 1 hour of football? With his complexion, he would burn up not tan.
