What They're Saying: Vice Presidential Debate, Volume One
George W. Bush ^ | October 5, 2004

Posted on 10/05/2004 8:55:03 PM PDT by RWR8189

ABC News' Poll Shows 43 Percent Think Vice President Cheney Won Debate, Only 35 Percent Think Edwards Won. (ABC's "Special Coverage," 10/5/04 )

NBC's Tom Brokaw:  "Dick Cheney Reminded Me Of George Foreman, Kind Of A Slow Gait, But A Powerful Right-Hand When He Unleashed It In A Number Of Areas As He Went After The Kerry-Edwards Ticket."  (NBC's "Special Coverage," 10/5/04 )

MSNBC's Ron Reagan:  "This Time, I Think The Chattering Classes, And I Include All Of Us Among Them, Will Come Out On The Side Of There Was A Stature Gap There, And It Was To Cheney's Advantage."  (MSNBC's "Hardball," 10/5/04 )

MSNBC's Chris Matthews Calls The Debate Between Vice President Cheney The "Howitzer" And Senator John Edwards The "Water Pistol."  (MSNBC's "Hardball," 10/05/04 )

MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell: "I Think Dick Cheney Did Awfully Well, At, First Of All, Putting John Edwards In His Place. Saying That I Have Been Presiding Over The Senate, And I Didn't Meet You Until Tonight. Talking About His Not Having Been On The Job Was Pretty Devastating."  (MSNBC's "Hardball," 10/5/04 )

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough:  "I Tell You, Tonight, No Doubt About It, Edwards Got Obliterated By Dick Cheney. This Is The Most Surprising Part. This Debate Actually Turned In Cheney's Direction When They Started Talking About Domestic Issues. I Thought Cheney Handled The Foreign Policy Issues Very Well."  (MSNBC's "Hardball," 10/5/04 )

I wish I could declare victory for the good guys, but I watched the debate, and it was a tie.

John Edwards was slick and likeable. He also controlled the agenda more than Cheney did and scored the 'Rat talking points.

However, Cheney was steady, intelligent, and authoritive, and he landed some direct hits--the Howard Dean remark was a home run.

The next debate is more important than the last two put together.

Exactly as planned by those who "advised" Kerry to take Edwards instead of the one he supposedly had wanted.
Wonder whether the "those" are Hillary.

The Best Cheney hay-maker of the night..........a knock out punch.

Dick Cheney didn't throw a single haymaker. That's a wild desperation punch. Cheney set up his right cross with the jab all night. The knockout came on an uppercut that the Johns should have seen coming the whole campaign.

The other Edawrds said that her hubby met Cheney at a prayer breakfast. That was sent to Chris Matthews earpiece about 10 minutes ago.

CBS had it Edwards 41% to 29% Cheney base on a sample of 169 undecided voters. At best a first impression poll.

The ABC flash poll says Cheney won, 43 to 35. Their sample was much larger. Also, the last CBS poll stacked their "undecided" voters with leaners to Kerry (31% to 19%), and President Bush -- as off his game as he was -- still managed to close this gap from 12 points to 7 points (38-31). Forget C-BS. Cheney won -- big time. It was a total rout, on both style and substance.

One observer noted that during most of the debate, John Edwards looked like he had been slapped.

Describe your position as VP without mentioning your running mate... John Kerry and I ... oh sorry I said his name... John Kerry and I ... oh look Dick Cheney got me so rattled that I did it again.. but I can be trusted... My dad a poor... poor mill worker sat in the glow of a TV learning math when I was a kid...

FACT CHECK... Poor, Poor, Mill Worker could never afford a TV in lets say what 1960 or so depending on how little he was when he came down the stairs and saw poor mill worker daddy watching a TV set that would amount to about $2,000 in todays money... Not too poor if you had a TV in the early 60's John and what was he learning Math... What channel PBS? Did they teach math on TV in the 60's maybe it was sesame street who knows.....Kerry Edwards... Short on style and substance... Go get real jobs and pay your taxes. Stop stealing from medicare.

I missed it, I was here on the very slow live debate thread. I think I'll see if C-SPAN is replaying it tonight.

The first of the ONE-TWO punch --- now on to Friday Night and the townhall seting where Bush can interact with the audience and willbe much more at ease. BUsh stumbled against Gore in Debate One and then found his footing in Townhall Debate (which came after another masterful cheney performance against Lieberman). I am feeling good tonight.

I also liked the Veep's point about K/E dissing Allawi when he was here. That was great. He showed some real reserved passion and that's exactly what the nation needed to see tonight. He absolutely highlighted the seriousness of the war we are in right now, the clash of civilizations and how there will be only one left standing.

If true, it obviously wasn't a memorable moment. :)
