FactCheck.org

I didn't listen to closely to the FactCheck.org reference that Cheney made.

I did find out that you have to use case carefully.

factcheck.com gets you to a George Soros site. Ick.

factcheck.org gets you to the Anneburg site. Ick.

FastCheck.org gets you to the site that Cheney referred to, but the server is too busy. I hope that people aren't stopping at the Soros or Anneburg site

After looking at the URL header for the last link I posted for the web cache, I noticed that the link went from http://web.archive.org/web/20021126124441/http://factcheck.com/ to http://web.archive.org/web/20041006073156/http://factcheck.com/_private/ when the "Private" folder was clicked on. This does indeed show that the site was linked after the debate. I now agree that this site happened overnight...wish I had the juice that billions of dollars bring.

Yeah, I thought that the Cayman's was a nice touch, but was probably there before Soros got the URL to be redirected.

I just heard on Hannity that factcheck.org ASKED George Souros if they could redirect to his site because they are getting so much traffic and "we certainly don't support George Bush." This from supposed truth tellers.

I finally got through the traffic and read the current items as well as a few in the archive.
My question: why would Cheney use this website as a reference? Except for a few, very weak token pro-right items, it is extremely left-biased, leaning WAY over backward to support Kerry-Edwards.

I agree completely. They are associated with the most liberal colleges in America. Nothing is more liberal than the colleges in America but the Univ of Penn and Brown are THE most liberal! Someone just told him that they cleared him on his personal pay issue so he said go there. It does not clear anything else!

Message now found on Soros's site, which factcheck.com redirects to:

" FactCheck.com Correction
We do not own the FactCheck.com domain name and are not responsible for it redirecting to GeorgeSoros.com. We are as surprised as anyone by this turn of events. We believe that Vice President Cheney intended to direct viewers of the Vice-Presidential Debate to FactCheck.org"(with a correct link to FactCheck.org)

Cheney Slip Sends Surfers to Wrong Site
Cheney's Slip-Up During Vice Presidential Debate Sends Net Surfers to Anti-Bush Site

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON Oct. 6, 2004 — All he wanted were the facts. But Dick Cheney ended up generating confusion and lots of it.

A slip of the tongue by the vice president during Tuesday night's debate with Sen. John Edwards led Web surfers to a site run by George Soros, a billionaire who makes no secret of his opposition to the Bush administration.

In answering a question about his involvement with Halliburton, Cheney meant to direct people to FactCheck.org, a nonpartisan site run by the University of Pennsylvania. He urged people watching the debate to go to the site for facts countering Edwards' statements about the corporation Cheney used to run.

But Cheney cited FactCheck.com, a for-profit advertising site based in the Cayman Islands.

The company decided to redirect traffic to the Soros site after it became inundated with hits about 100 a second after the debate, John Berryhill, a Philadelphia lawyer for FactCheck.com, said Wednesday.

"This was to relieve stress on the service and to express a political point of view," said Berryhill, who spoke with the site's administrators shortly after the debate ended.

They picked Soros not only for his political views, Berryhill said, but because the billionaire could afford the costly deluge of hits the site would receive in the wake of the debate. Plus, the site administrators didn't want to point surfers to a candidate's site that was asking for money.

Web site operators typically pay fees to the companies that host their sites. The more hits a site receives, the more its operator pays.

Soros was not advised of the switch and did not know it had taken place until Wednesday, said a spokesman, Jeremy Ben-Ami.

Well you got me.

The only thing I can tell you is that factcheck.org's article that exonerates Cheney on Halliburton was strong and comprehensive.
