Good ideas. In addition, high-income working parents might consider hiring a fulltime tutor and educate their kids at home until both public and private schools can assure them that the highest security measures have been taken.
Even then, a Stinger missile can reach a school from quite a distance...so security guards, gates, etc. may not be effective enough.
This alert scares me to death as I have two grandchildren attending an Embassy School in a Muslim nation.
Even if the schools are protected there is no guarantee that the schools buses could not be hijacked. In fact it could be done easily. I hope that they have trained school bus drivers what to do if someone steps out in front of them with a gun. (they need to run over them!) We have to hunt these guys down and kill them. No more political correctness.
My guess is a couple of hundred thousand to a million.
Apparently the 3,000 dead in an hour on 9/11 and the 1000 since then haven't even made a dent in the leftist imbeciles dementia as to what is going on.

The common thread is probably defensability and attackability. Here in California, many schools are built with open halls and are very spread out. These would be practically indefensible and allow many (possibly most) children to escape. They'll look for schools with closed hallways and only a few entrances. They'll look for multistory buildings that will give them a good view of the surrounding land. They'll look for buildings that are far from police departments and major thoroughfares to give them more time to secure the school before the police arrive. They'll probably prefer the smaller towns with small police forces and without a full time SWAT team.
In other words, look at it from a military standpoint. If the school can be quickly seized and held securely while giving the terrorists the ability to control the surrounding area, it's a potential target. If it's a wide open school next door to the town police department and SWAT team, it's not a likely target.
Like Beslan, the terrorists will want as much bang as they can get out of the capture. They'll hold them for days to get all of the nations media on the scene and build up suspense, and THEN they'll kill them. IMO, this is probably going to be the U.S. equivalent of the Spanish train bombing. They'll hit us in the week or two before the election in an attempt to make us cower into a Kerry victory.
Without any "Publicity," the Families of the ANIMALS who Perpetrated Such a Horror would be IMMEDIATELY AT RISK.
America would respond to such Barbarity with a SAVAGERY of UNPARALLED DESTRUCTIVE POWER!
The "Relatives of" the "Perpetrators of" Such an Abomination would INSTANTLY BE AT RISK.
Those of Us "In the West" would REQUIRE THAT "Those Whom the Terrorists MOST Cherish" become INSTANT Hostages!!

I just had a horrible, terrible thought. What happens if terrorists seize the schools on the 1st, and claim that they'll free the kids if Kerry is elected and kill them if Bush is reelected? Oh damn, I wish I hadn't thought of that :(

I don't think I saw you on this one.
This is my first time on FreeRepublic but have been lurking for many years. Birch Run, Mi. is a few miles from where I live and it is a very small town which has a large Outlet Mall. Many Muslims seem to shop there and a lot of people from Canada also.

God help them if they do. My family are primarily teachers. They would all 'take the bullet' for the kids. Most teachers would. That is the scary part for those of us who worry about our families' safety, let alone that of the children.

This would be an attractive option to terrorists because they could just hold the children hostage and kill them slowly to make Bush look weak before the election and attempt to achieve their short term goal (defeating Bush) in order to acheive their long term goal (defeating all of us). Think about it, its a lose/lose situation. Either you have tons of dead children or a weak looking President. A regular attack is over and the President can look decisive and retaliate but this politically is much more damaging.
Yes, you're very right. But unfortunately, terrorists from muslim nations (as referred to in the article) may use the large, purely innocent muslim population in this area to blend in.
