To be fair, even he may have a hard time admitting this, but during his 12 years as mayor of NYC, after his 6th year or so he became increasingly fair minded and NOT a knee-jerk liberal.
I recall how he called for calm during the Bernie Goetz shootings (explicitly saying that our reaction shouldn't be a 'racial incident' everytime a minority is harmed, a sentiment he repeated many times), and how his 'last stand' began when he was critical of Jesse Jackson during his 88 presidential run.
While Ed wad never a conservative, he certainly wasn't a 'party line liberal dem' as he ended his terms in office.
Ed's a good guy. I am glad he is stumping for Dubya.
