He got a lot of mileage in his movies by playing a neurotic schmuck. Now I realize his success is based on the same principle Ringo Starr sang about in the old song Act Naturally: "They're going to put me in the movies, they're going to make a big star out of me; I'll act sad and lonely, and all I have to do is act naturally!"

Of course, I must admit, I love his movies, "especially the earlier funnier ones". His early stand-up stuff is ingenious and very funny.

I agree his older works are funny. But all of his new works are just not there. I think the times changed and so did he... but they went in different directions.

Irregardless he is not someone I hold a lot of respect for. His comments on 9/11 were pretty callous and shows he feels he is "above all that".

I think Woody Allen's movies up till Annie Hall were all excellent movies, but after that most of them have been quite inferior (with a few exceptions like Zelig).
