Sorry, any interference with a defender in that instance returns runners to their original base. Can't find my BB rule book, but I know the rule from having lived through it when I played ball years (and pounds) ago!

You can't find it because there is no rule for interference in this case. The umps just made it up?

Rule 2.00:

"(a) Offensive interference is an act by the team at bat which interferes with, obstructs, impedes, hinders or confuses any fielder attempting to make a play. If the umpire declares the batter, batter-runner, or a runner out for interference, all other runners shall return to the last base that was in the judgment of the umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference, unless otherwise provided by these rules."

The umps ruled that Jeter did not legally touch second base.

Riot gear cops circling the field now. Someone remind me, did this happen in Boston when our calls were blown?

Sorry, Turkey, just found it. It's rule 6.05(i), which states: (i) After hitting or bunting a ball, he intentionally deflects the course of the ball in any manner while running to first base. The ball is dead and no runners may advance;

NTERFERENCE
(a) Offensive interference is an act by the team at bat which interferes with, obstructs, impedes, hinders or confuses any fielder attempting to make a play. If the umpire declares the batter, batter runner, or a runner out for interference, all other runners shall return to the last base that was in the judgment of the umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference, unless otherwise provided by these rules. In the event the batter runner has not reached first base, all runners shall return to the base last occupied at the time of the pitch.
