Yep after WWII, the permanent members were the main Allied nations, of which France was a member (whether they deserved it, is a whole other matter).

Excuse my ignorance but...France?? Freakin' France is *permanent*??? Decades ago, when the UN was formed, France was actually considered a significant country.
