in reality, if he had just bowled the guy down, he would have been awarded first base if not second....

If he "just bowled the guy down" on the FIRST BASE LINE he would have been called out, started a bench clearing brawl, been ejected from the game and possibly suspended from any subsequent playoff games, and been IN THE WRONG. You don't run down a pitcher on the first base line. You don't bury anyone but the catcher at home plate. He's wearing padding and leg armor, he's ready. That's timeless baseball etiquette.
Have you ever PLAYED baseball at any advanced level? Inadvertant collisions are bone breakers, much less a 215 pound stud running over a defenseless 175 pound stringbean when he's not ready. That's unsporting to the max.
