I can't help wondering why people (soldiers and civilians) under these circumstances surrender rather than to go down fightin?
That is a serious question. When you know that you are going to be shot in the head or have your head removed with a dull knife...

Rebels slaughter 49 Iraqi army recruits Police said guerrillas disguised as police had set up a checkpoint on a road northeast of Baghdad and stopped three minibuses carrying the recruits, forcing them to leave the vehicles and lie face down on the tarmac before shooting them.
A dozen recruits tried to flee but were also shot.
