Schilling's red sock is a fitting symbol(Inappropriate Press Article)
San Diego Union-Tribune ^

Tom Sullivan, a sports writer, writes in the San Diego Union-Tribune:
"The Red Badge of Courage is a soiled sock. It's the blood-stained stocking that covers Curt Schilling's right ankle. It's one of those garments that should be spared detergent, like the Shroud of Turin or Monica Lewinsky's blue cocktail dress."
Is it just me or does anyone else find this distasteful? Whatever you may believe or not believe about the Shroud of Turin, millions of Christians of many traditions and denominations believe it is the real burial shroud of Christ. Many find it sacred. The comparison to Monica Lewinsky's blue dress is most inappropriate and stupid.

I started to write the person-who-thinks-like-a-trial-lawyer-scumbag but I figured ... why waste the effort on someone who would not even have the slightest idea what decency was.

I don't take it the same way that you do. The author is pointing out that the sock is historic. To a Yankee fan it is probably more like the blue dress; to a Sox fan it is like the shroud.
I did not take offense.

Don't let this guy taint you about the San Diego Trib. They also had 2 long great articles that spelled out why the Viet Vets hate kerry. Both were very compelling!

It's a real stretch to consider this offensive.
To: shroudie
It's a huge stretch finding this offensive. The article was done tongue in cheek, pointing out all the years of heartbreak that Boston fans have had to endure. What Schilling did to beat the Yankees was remarkable.
No offense taken here.

To place the name of the "Shroud of Turin" into the same sentence as anything to do with the male-whore-in-chief clinton IS sacrilegious.

My complaint is not with the paper. It is with the lack of common sense by one sports writer.

Not distasteful.
Besides, the Shroud is a fake anyways and Lewinsky's a fat cow. I can't think of two better things to compare a Red Sox player to.

It is with the lack of common sense by one sports writer. Maybe you could explain that to me - it seems plain enough that he thinks the sock should be a historic garment. Not that a sock is equal to a shroud, or that Shilling is equal to Jesus.

He didn't compare the shroud to Lewinsky's blue dress. All he said was that they have something in common (they shouldn't be laundered). He's right.
Perhaps you're looking too hard for a reason to be offended.

Now I have to rewrite that passage in my new novel, "Stained Legacy" where it reads "... and then President Clinton finished using the sink, reached over and grabbed the Shroud of Turin from the towel bar and proceeeded to wipe himself..."
The things I do to keep my fellow FReepers happy. Sigh.

______________
No more stupid than trying to work up a real good sense of outrage over this.
Forget the marriage amendment, we need a constitutional amendment that sentences to death anyone who offends anyone else, for any reason, at any time, in any place, under any circumstances.
Either that, or, maybe just get over it. I completely agree with the poster who suggests you may be looking too hard to take offense.

Maybe all of your are right. The saving grace is that the laundry probably would not do in the images on the Shroud. See:
A Forensic Science CSI on the Pictures of Jesus on the Shroud of Turin for why this is so. Maybe I am too sensitive. Thanks go letting me rage about it here. As for the person who took a shot at Yankee fans, that was over the top.
