The Washington Times reports that the Democrats have already filed nine separate lawsuits in Florida, challenging various aspects of Tuesday's election procedures:
Led by the Florida Democratic Party, the People for the American Way, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the AFL-CIO, the lawsuits target, among others, Florida Secretary of State Glenda Hood, who was appointed by Republican Gov. Jeb Bush, President Bush's brother. The suits say Republican officials refused to count provisional ballots, improperly disqualified incomplete voter registrations, established overly restrictive rules to disproportionately hurt minority voters and actively sought to disenfranchise blacks.
One suit challenges a ruling by Mrs. Hood to throw out forms on which new voters had failed to check a box indicating whether they were U.S. citizens, and another argued that although only 17 percent of the voters in Broward County and 20 percent in Miami-Dade County were black, more than a third of the voter-registration forms that were determined to be incomplete and invalid in both counties involved black voters.
One would think that someone newly registering to vote could be required to at least represent that he is an American citizen. Apparently not, according to the Democratic Party. Ken Mehlman commented on the Democrats' blizzard of lawsuits:
What you're seeing is an attempt, through lawsuits and through intimidation, by Democrats to convert their allies' registration fraud into voter fraud on Election Day. What you're going to see is an attempt by them, regardless of what the outcome is, to say: 'It's unfair. We're going to sue.' " I think that's exactly right. The essence of the Democrats' strategy is to use bullying tactics to facilitate voter fraud, which they hope will tip the election in their favor.
Here we go; wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Bring it on, lib-dem garbage!!
Jeez, can't people fill out a simple card.
And so it begins..........
If they can't should they be allowed to vote -- ??
On the other hand, does a party launch 9 "pre-emptive" lawsuits when it thinks it is winning a state? You would think there would be too much risk of a backlash. I suspect the Dems view Florida as slipping away from them.
Lib attempts at vote fraud are blocked by the Florida Secretary of State.
Deja-vu or what?
Any time a Florida-related thread is created on FreeRepublic, please be sure to add the "Florida" keyword to it so that interested FReepers don't miss it.
Onward to victory,
And looking at this another way, perhaps the Dems already know something about Florida, i.e. that they are going to lose it.
So, send $25 to the GOP so they can meet the dems in court. Taking something to court is just a tactic; we shouldn't shy from it or fear it. Dems are daft if they think taking something to court will give them an advantage.
I think everyone but Dim koolaid drinkers are sick of lawsuits. Everyone remembers (not fondly) the kid who always tried to change the rules so they'd always win. This will cause a backlash.
Yes, I do believe you are correct. I heard yesterday on FOX that Bush had Florida and the Dim talking head was in denial. LOL
ok, i might as well throw it out there. bush wins in a landslide. why do i say that? here's 4 reasons. 1) hawaii
2) new jersey 3) michigan 4) ohio. i say bush wins those states, sweeps nm, nv, new hampshire, barely wins minnesota, and wins florida by 7 points. being tied in new jersey, hawaii, and minnesota are big indicators of a coming tide that will sweep away this election for bush. don't believe the race is a tie baloney- bush is up 5 to 6 points. and they can't defraud enough votes to win. the bogus new york times story will really hurt kerry if bush will come out and criticize kerry for slamming our military.
Not if they don't indicate that they are a citizen. Dispite what the dems want, that is kindof a requirement for voting.
I want a list of every rat lawyer that pulls this garbage. Their practices should be shunned by any Republican who is looking for counsel.
From Ballon Juice:
How To Steal an Election, Part One
I guess the grand strategy of the Democrats is to create so much hostility and suspicion regarding this election that any outcome that does not lead to a Kerry victory will be unsatisfactory. Step one is the pre-emptive lawsuit. How does this work?
Simple- just file a lawsuit challenging every single law regarding the conduct of elections, and for extra flavor, claim racism as your basis on each one:
Democrats in Florida already are pursuing nine election-related lawsuits, accusing state election officials of conspiring to disenfranchise minority voters.
Matt Miller, a spokesman for the Kerry campaign, said Republicans are "trying to scare people away from the polls."
But Mrs. Hood's spokesman, Alia Faraj, described the lawsuits as politically motivated, saying they were eroding public confidence in the election process by challenging "every single law we are following."
Assholes. The clear intent is to subvert the election process- and no matter how fair the election is, to claim it invalid. The last few days have made me change my mind. I am starting to almost hope Kerry wins so I can be an irresponsible flamethrowing asshole like the Democrats have been. It has to be liberating. You can say anything, charge your opponent with anything, and never have to be burdened with providing evidence, nor do they seem to have problems with their collective consciences.
From Captain's Quarters:
Florida Unions, Attorneys Argue Minorities Are More Incompetent
People need to understand the difference between disenfranchisement and incompetence in terms of voting and registration. Disenfranchisement results from direct government action in denying valid voters the right to cast their ballots. Incompetence is a potential voter who isn't bright or thorough enough to fill out a ballot or registration card correctly. Florida unions and attorneys were disappointed yesterday to find this out in federal court, where they offered the odd and specious argument that minorities are more incompetent than others:
Florida election officials will not be required to process incomplete voter registration forms for the presidential election, a federal judge ruled Tuesday.
U.S. District Judge James Lawrence King said the three prospective voters for whom the lawsuit was filed did not have the legal standing to pursue the case, which was backed by the AFL-CIO. ... Attorneys with the Washington-based Advancement Project said the plaintiffs would appeal by Friday. The group argued that the rejections disqualified more than 14,000 people across the state, with a disparate effect on minorities. Nearly 45 percent of the challenged forms in one county, Duval, came from blacks.
It makes no difference if the registrations came from blacks, whites, Greens, or left-handed mauvish CPAs. If the registrant didn't complete the form correctly, they need to refile their registrations. Part of voting is the responsibility to make sure one is registered to vote properly. With registration requirements as lax as they are these days, how much of a hurdle does that present?
Playing the race card is especially despicable and condescending. Does the AFL-CIO really intend to argue to an appellate judge than minorities are inherently unable to take responsibility for their own voter registration? Perhaps they will tell the judge that filling out a form with check boxes presents too difficult a challenge for the African-Americans in Duval County, an argument that minorities throughout Florida should detest. It's nothing more than an incitement for Democrats to arftificially undermine the results of the election.
If a voter of any ethnicity cannot be trusted to properly fill out a voter registration card, especially with the relaxed requirements now in place, we surely cannot be better off by allowing them to pull the lever on November 2nd.
Looks like SCOFLA will be called in once again to attempt a desperate filibuster of the Florida EC votes.
Well HELLO. If the people are TOO STUPID to properly complete a voter registration, they are also TOO STUPID to vote.
Provisional ballots should be banned in all states.
Restrictive rules???? Rules ARE rules.
Oh, I forgot. Rules ONLY APPLY to Republicans.
