Al-Jazeera Airs Videotape by Bin Laden
Oct 29, 4:16 PM (ET)

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - The Arab television station Al-Jazeera aired a video of Osama bin Laden on Friday directly admitting for the first time that he carried out the Sept. 11 attacks and promising to outline "the best way to avoid another Manhattan."

It was the first footage of the al-Qaida leader to surface in more than a year. The video showed bin Laden in traditional white robes, a turban and a cloak reading from papers and standing in front of a plain, brown cloth background.

"We decided to destroy towers in America," bin Laden said.

He said the attack was carried out because "we are a free people ... and we want to regain the freedom of our nation."

He also accused President Bush of "misleading" the American people three years since the 2001 suicide airline hijackings that hit the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon.

Let's wait to see if it's really recent; Newpaper headlines, if he mentions very recent events, if it's his voice, etc.

Can someone please clarify if this is a "still picture with audio" or an actual video with his lips moving and so on?

DUBAI (Reuters) - Osama bin Laden accused President Bush of deceiving the American people and said the Sept. 11 attacks would not have been so severe if the president had been alert.

In an address on Al Jazeera television just days ahead of the U.S. presidential election, bin Laden also said the U.S. administration resembled "corrupt" Arab governments.

"It never occurred to us that the commander in chief of the country (Bush) would leave 50,000 citizens in the two towers to face those horrors alone ... because he thought listening to a child discussing her goats was more important," bin Laden said, referring to Bush's visit to a school when the attack occurred.

Al Qaeda leader bin Laden said he had first thought of attacking the United States after the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. U.S. intelligence agencies believe that it appeared to be bin Laden on the tape, one official said.

Bin Laden appeared to be sitting or standing at a table against a neutral brown background. He wore a round, white head covering and white tunic under a light brown cloak.

Reading from a sheet of paper, his voice was strong and he appeared in fair health, his full beard a mixture of white and dark gray. At times he gestured at the camera with his right index finger to emphasize points.

Cavuto just reported something in the tape bin Laden said about Bush allowing those people to die in the towers while he read about some goats.

Rhetorical question: will Michael Moore be embarrassed that bin Laden is taking a page out of his book?

Anybody else hear Cavuto say Bin Laden makes reference to Bush reading "My Pet Goat" to school children instead of protecting America.

Well, we know where he gets his material from!

Someone on FNS made an excellent comment: Kerry will now have to make it appear that he does not agree with bin Laden. Good freaking luck, since the whole videotape appears to have taken their script from a Kerry campaign rally.

BBC:  Bin Laden threatens new attacks

Bin Laden Arabic TV station al-Jazeera has broadcast a videotape apparently featuring Osama Bin Laden, in which he threatens new attacks on the US.

In his opening remarks, the al-Qaeda leader accused President George W Bush of deceiving Americans in the years since the 11 September 2001 attacks.

He compared the Bush administration to what he termed corrupt Arab regimes.

The development comes as US voters prepare to go to the polls on Tuesday in the presidential election.

Bin Laden said he first thought of attacking the US after the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982.

He said the attacks on the US would have been less severe if President Bush had been more alert.

But he added that the security of the American people depended neither on Mr Bush nor on his challenger, John Kerry, but on US policy. "The reasons to repeat what happened remain," he said.

If genuine, this is the first videotape of Bin Laden speaking to have surfaced since the US-led war in Afghanistan following the 11 September attacks, which he is generally thought to have masterminded.

It was not obvious when the video was recorded.

However, several audio messages believed to be from Bin Laden have emerged since then.

The most recent, posted on a website known to be used by Islamist militants, strongly criticised the US and coalition forces in Iraq and ordered a jihad, or holy war, against them.

"Bin Laden also accused President Bush of deceiving the American people..."

Looks like he's got his talking points from Terry McAuliffe.

Another foreign leader with a ringing endorsement for John Kerry. It also seems like he got hold of Michael Moore's F9/11--now on DVD.
