U.S. Job Gains Strongest in Seven Months

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New U.S. jobs soared at the sharpest rate in seven months in October, the government reported on Friday, helped by a surge in construction activity as hurricane-battered areas in the Southeast were rebuilt.

A surprisingly strong 337,000 jobs were added to payrolls last month -- twice the 169,000-job growth that Wall Street economists had forecast and the strongest since March when 353,000 jobs were created, the Labor Department said.

Still, the unemployment rate edged up to 5.5 percent from 5.4 percent in September, but that was because more people joined the search for employment, a potentially hopeful sign.

Not only was October a strong month but the number of jobs created in the two prior months was revised up -- to 139,000 in September instead of 96,000 and to 198,000 in August instead of 128,000.

I lost my job in Janurary and have been doing contract work in computer programming since. During the past 2 weeks, I have noticed a big increase in the number of companies calling me for both permanent and temporary positions.

and also remember, since it doesn't do any good anymore (Bush won), it's ok again for the economy to improve, gas prices to go down, flu shots to be more available, iraq elections to be held, falluja to fall, sun allowed to shine. Tried our best but didn't work.

Thank GOD that W was re-elected! All the talking-down of the economy and the market manipulation couldn't stop this economy from growing.

With all the favorable economic news in the last 48 hours,my paranoid mind can't help but think that there was some manipulation of the crude oil futures market, left-wing partisan government employees in some departments adjusting survey results and statistics, and other anti-Bush government personnel leaking unfavorable information (whistleblowing on Halliburton?) prior to the election.

You're spot on.

Federal Employees are traditionally Democrat.   This is just like in '88 when on the the day before the (economy stupid) election, the gdp was reported as being in collapse.   Right after Clinton wins the report gets 'revised' to show a record recovery that Willie has the gall to take credit for.

Same nonsense in '00 but that time the press had rose colored glasses before the election.  These days serious people have just downloaded the numbers for themselves and have stopped following comentators altogether.

The issue is not whether you are paranoid, but whether you are paranoid enough.

I believe Soros was manipulating the oil market to hurt GWB.

This would have been known as "The Kerry Recovery". Let the avalanche of good news begin.

I have noticed an increase in IT jobs in the past year, and I spent over half a year out of work after my job got sent to India. It was and still is a tough market. Does anyone know what the job total creation for this year is? The administration claimed they woudl create 2.5 and the media laughed at him. I think he is pretty close to it now.
