Flag flap spurs call for formal apology

AMHERST - Vladimir Morales, who helped organize a Puerto Rican flag-raising ceremony in honor of Puerto Rican month, is asking for a formal apology from the woman he said took the flag down.

Friday, the flag was raised on the Town Common with more than 100 people gathered to celebrate and sing the Puerto Rican national anthem. But on Sunday, Town Meeting member Patricia K. Church apparently thought the flag was the state flag of Texas. Upset with the results from last week's presidential election, Church later told Morales it was she who took it down, Morales said. Bush is from Texas.

Both flags have a single star set on blue background. But the Puerto Rican flag has red and white stripes and the star is set in a triangular background, while the Texan flags is half white and half red with the star set in a rectangular background.

Morales said when he heard the flag was missing his first thought was that it had been vandalized.

"It gives you a bad taste," he said. "We had a good thing on Friday. ... We felt aggrieved."

When he heard the flag was found and what happened, he said, "It was a misunderstanding," but he said the act still surprised him. "The point of taking it on themselves. I think the folks need to be a little more careful."

He would like Church to apologize formally to the whole community. Church could not be reached for comment.

The Puerto Rican flag, meanwhile, was back up yesterday in front of Town Hall.

"Hi, I'm Patricia K. Church and I'm an absolute idiot."

Any guess on party affiliation...?

But this was in Massachusetts? The left is just plain nuts. They have no business voting, IMO.

This isn't a misunderstanding. The person responsible knew precisely that what they were doing was WRONG, regardless of the fact that they were mistaken as to the identity of the flag, they should be fined and punished.

Now, this sentence proves that she's stupid for not knowing the difference between the TX and PR flags. But I wish the author would have also mentioned how stupid she is for actually taking down a state flag just because she dislikes the President.

LOL, I sold some Texas Flag socks on Ebay lately. I got great feedback from everyone, except this one lady from Mass. She emailed me that the socks were Puerto Rican not Texan. I told her to mail them back to me if they were and I would refund her money including shipping.

I sent her a picture of both flags and she promptly left me positive feedback and never said another word.

Must be something in the water.

The insult was directed toward Texas and an apology should be given to the great State of Texas.

Look, even the reporter found it necessary to remind her Massachusetts audience that the President was from Texas!

Even young children throughout "Red State" areas know that.

Bullshit.

I'm amazed that she had enough testosterone to 'mess with Texas', even in error.

I worked in Amherst in the late '80s. They always flew the United Nations flag back then. Amherst is evil. Commie evil.

Was there an American flag flying at the common or was that taken down for the Puerto Rican flag, or did they fly side by side? Just asking because this was in Mass. which believe it or not is still part of the USA.

Is a miserable little commonwealth worthy of an entire month?
They take welfare, they don't pay taxes, they don't want statehood 'cause then they would HAVE to pay taxes. They're a drain on our country. Cut 'em loose and let the UN nurse 'em.

The 'ricans got to vote in '67, '81, and '93 on whether they wanted to 'stand on their own' or 'keep sucking at the public teat' - is it any wonder which way they voted all three times? When do we citizens get the same vote on that useless bunch?

The US made a big mistake in 1917...
