I guess I'm the only one on the forum who agrees with the administrations plans regarding Mexico.

One would certainly hope so.

I don't think the President was 'unhappy' with Powell. I think he respects the differing opinions coming from individual Cabinet members, including Powell, and that he respects him greatly.

His leadership style encourages others to state an array of differing, honest views from which he makes his own decisions as to which course to take.

I really believe this is a matter of Powell's being just plain worn out with the incredible stress of the past four years.

Your sense-of-humor

Naming Wolfowitz
would be like taunting the 'Rats

did you read my post?

I was comparing the appointment of the DEMOCRATIC Senator from Delaware to any Cabinet level post in this administration to political suicide.
Calm down

I too would like to thank Mr. Powell for his service. I may be in the minority here, but I dont hold him in as much contempt as many here seem to. He is a Great American.

I agree. I think he's a good man and a trustworthy one, and one that has been a much-needed voice of moderation and common sense.

THANK GOD!!

Worst choice Bush made, and thought so at the time. Typical State Department hack - don't break any eggs/live and let live attitude. Not any more. Cold War pragmatism is far over, and hopefully Bush's new choice will reflect that, or expect more of the same. Other countries don't like it? Too freaking bad. Look at where their policies have gotten us. Time to lead, not join the pack.

That's really odd. A news report that came out when Ashcroft and Evans left said that Veneman was one who had asked to stay on. I wonder if that means Bush said, "no."

Too bad. Is considered the only reasonable guy in the US administration here in Holland. Although with his BS presentation at the UN he lossed some credit.

Powell was 100% on board, despite the media's fantasies that the past two years have been "Saint Powell vs Neocon Hawks."

Powell gave the presentation of evidence against Saddam at the UN. Powell's work helped put together a huge coalition in Iraq. He dragged himself out of bed after surgery to publically rebut one of Kennedy's Bush-bash rantings back in 2003.

He did a great job. However, he failed to clear out the State Department--which was not his fault, since Bush wasn't interested in getting rid of Clinton holdovers (and may not be interested in it now.) I'm hoping Newt Gingrich gets the SecState job, since he's already discussed how the career pukes in State are trying to undermine Bush. Let Newt clear them out.

I personally have nothing against Powell, just wish he had the courage and strength of Rummy who took on Hillry's generals with that bottom up review of the Pentagon

thanks for your clarification. you are correct in that rummy stands tall and is not pushed around. initially, i thought you had thought powell had not done a decent job and i now better understand your thoughts. thanks again, friend!

I agree that Powell is a good guy who's done a good job but there are problems at State that don't seem to be getting fixed, so I think it is proper that he should be stepping down, and to do so now, when it's expected, rather than last year, is also tribute to his being a class act and an asset to the President. If he were to run for President he would be a force to be reckoned with and I'm not sure if we'd like it very much.

I like Fred or Don, but not any of the others. They seem to be more of the same old pragmatic politician crap that we've had in the past. New era, need a new State Department.

Joel Mowbray for SOS!

Just because all of the SoS that have held that job fit the profile you have presented does not mean it is right...
Look at the mess State Dept. is in. How do you think it got that way?
Maybe a bomb thrower is what we really need; maybe someone who will lift up the rocks and foce the slimey creatures into the light.

I don't think Rumsfeld believes he can afford to leave right now. I certainly don't. The transformation of the DoD has only just started and would be too easy to derail without a firm advocate running the show. Rummy doesn't mind the heat. And he clearly believes in what he's doing. So do I. But if he does go, expect him to be replaced by a Marine. Someone with vision, and someone who isn't afraid to make enemies in the Department of the Army.

If Bush does anything with Biden other than buy him a one way ticket on the next Mars lander, I'll be shocked. Hasn't Biden called Bush brain dead, or incompetent, or something like that? Bush likes a loyal cabinet. Biden doesn't fill that bill. Bush's goal for the next term is to find a solution for the Israeli/Palistinian conflict. What about Lieberman? It would match Bush's aggressive in-your-face posture. Putting a Jew into the SoS position would be even better than putting a woman in there. Force the Arabs to negotiate with a rational "enemy".
