ALSO HEARING [KJL]
from a Senate staffer:
the caucus and leadership meetings were not love fests. Specter was forced to address the issues and his leadership of the committee, and to defend himself. Hatch in fact did exit the meeting and put his arm around Specter and endorsed him.
Conservatives are livid about Hatch's actions, but now feel there is little that can be done. The old guard is backing him, and some more endorsements are expected tonight and tomorrow. The way it was put to me is that barring a last minute surprise, Specter has the job.

Depressing news. Hatch is the penultimate RINO. We need to boot these guys out.
Well even if he gets it I believe he's been put on notice....we are watching.
Remember the loyalty these men showed you when the next election rolls around. What's the point in "winning" if they ignore your voice?
Good judges will be blocked, conservative christians will stay home in 2008
No, he's the ultimate RINO.
We need to keep vigilant for the 2006 elections.
Yep. No way they would deny Arlen his chairmanship. But the good news is he got the message. And I don't think he'll try to double-cross us. He will give President Bush's nominees a fair hearing. That's more than they would get from Patrick Leahy, who would not give them any confirmation hearings, period. Arlen's ACU Lifetime rating is 43. Leahy's is 6. Sure, the PA Senator's a RINO but he's a LOT more conservative than any Democrat. I like having him piss in our tent than outside it.
Depressing.
I see it as cause for celebration. I want the RINOs with us rather than with the Democrats. When we lost Jeffords, it was a disaster. I don't to have us go through that again. We conservatives have to accept some compromises for the long-range good. I'll live with a RINO chairman so long as conservative judicial nominees get confirmed. To me, that's an acceptable trade-off.
This could be very bad news. Specter is a snake in the grass and cannot be trusted, whatever he might say now. It may just mean that if Bush wants to get any good conservatives on the Supreme Court, he will be restricted to choosing from among the black or Hispanic possibilities...after all, Clarence Thomas got through even when the Senate had a Democrat majority. Estrada may have been filibustered for a lower court appointment, but a Supreme Court nomination is too high-profile, and the 'Rats may be afraid to prevent him from receiving a vote if Bush selects him.
If there are going to be any vacancies on the high court in the next four years, they had better come in the next two years...after that the 'Rats will stall hoping that Hillary will get to fill vacancies.
I hate to be flip but what universe do you live in? "Doublecross" is Aren's middle name.
Hatch has had his beeber stuned big time. I wonder if the Dems have something on him? He was once sorta one of the Right Guys, but he has evolved.
The scorpion will sting the frog, I fear. "It's his nature".
I'm sorry but you don't know what your talking about.
Hatch is just another stinking RINO lib that needs to be booted. With "friends" like these, who needs enemies?
That is a really good point.
True...but I oppose Specter because of his opposition to tort reform etc....other important isues in addition to judges. Since the rest of the panel is much more conservative, he could not stop a judge himself. But, he has too much power to be worthy of it.
We will lose the RINO's if he is chairman or not.
