Cruising With the Swells of National Review, Part 3: 400 Conservatives and Me

The shocked liberals who are desperately seeking conspiracy theories to explain how Bush could have won should also be here to watch and listen. They might understand where those 59 million people come from, and how they manage to stumble through life without minders. They would be astounded, I believe, at how literate and informed this band of brothers and sisters are. I’ve dined with teachers and doctors, with NASA scientists, and octogenarians who write columns for local papers. Dinner conversations revolve around such simplistic themes as whether Sen. Arlen Specter was correct in his classification of Judge Bork’s view on original intent in the Founding Fathers. There is controversy and debate over whether the exit polls can be relied upon in charting a swing of Hispanic voters to Bush. There is exasperation over the inability of liberals to support their opinions with facts. And there is wry amusement over the hope that liberals continue to misunderestimate conservatives.

This ocean cruise would be still more exquisitely pleasurable if [for the benefit of the conservative guests] the ship carried a large cage with few liberals on suicide watch. The guests would be strolling by to look at them, offer condolences and maybe a carrot or a cracker.

Conservatives recognize that even with the emerging ''new media'' forces of talk radio, the Internet, and Fox News, the majority of Americans have their opinions shaped by the liberal ''old media.'' The intellectual battle ahead will be long and difficult, partly because it is not just a challenge of ideas but of getting those ideas out to the people.

The big difference is that liberals generally don't view our disagreement as an intellectual battle. They see no need to think about their positions, as they view them as accepted fact, and their amen chorus in the media just reinforces this view.

In the long run it's impossible to win a battle if you refuse to recognize that you're in one.
