Election Day May Grow To Season

Could Election Day be turned into election season?

Florida's elections supervisors are thinking about a major change in the way voters go to the polls, according to a report in Wednesday's Orlando Sentinel.

Early voting was a huge hit, and inspired what could turn Election Day into election days -- as many as 15.

About this time last month people were lining up in long lines at the polls to cast their votes early. Across the state, 2.3 million people voted early. Election supervisors have now come up with a plan that would create an 11-day voting period. Voters could also go to any of a number of so-called voter centers instead of their individual precinct.

Orange County Election Supervisor Bill Cowles told the Sentinel he could replace his 252 precincts with 80 voting centers. That would mean fewer poll workers, fewer machines and less expense.

The possible problem could be longer lines. The plan is still in its early stages.

"The possible problem could be longer lines."

Amen to that. I voted early in Okaloosa County, which had only two early voting locations available. Only 15% of registered voters managed to vote early in this county, and during the entire period the lines were hour-long or more. They would have to provide a lot more facilities to make this work next time.

I agree, with the population getting larger all the time, I think the mainstay of having a single election day needs to go the way of the Dinosaur. That way you have more time to check out any possible problems before all the votes are counted. I'd second that idea!

NO. You need more polling places. That's all that is required.
