November 30, 2004 -- WASHINGTON — U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said yesterday he was "disappointed" to learn his son Kojo was getting secret payments from a company under investigation for its role in the Iraq oil-for-food scandal. Speaking for the first time about the latest bombshell to rock the world body, Annan told reporters he had not been aware his 29-year-old son continued to receive $2,500 a month from the Swiss firm Cotecna until February of this year, when the scandal first became public.
"Naturally, I was very surprised and disappointed," Annan said.
"I had been working under the understanding that it [payments to his son] ceased in 1998 and I had not expected that the relationship continued."
Attempting to explain how he could not have known about the possible conflict Annan added:
"Naturally, I have warm family relations with my son, but he is in a different field. He is a grown man and I don't get involved in his activities and he doesn't get involved in mine."

Kofi Annan saying he is "disappointed" to find out about his son's involvement (months and months after many around the world knew about it) is like Dan Rather saying he "would like to break the story" if the documents turn out to be fake.
